Woe to those at ease in Zion

1Woe to the complacent in Zion, \q and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, \q the notable leaders of the foremost nation, \q to whom the house of Israel comes! 2Go over to Calneh and look; \q go on from there to Hamath the great, \q then go down to Philistine Gath. Are those cities better than your kingdoms? \q Is their land larger than yours? 3You put off the day of disaster, \q yet you bring near the reign of violence. 4They lie on beds inlaid with ivory \q and sprawl on their couches; \q they eat lambs from the flock \q and calves fattened in the stall. 5They improvise songs to the sound of the harp, \q and like David they invent musical instruments for themselves. 6They drink wine by the bowlful \q and anoint themselves with the finest oils, \q but they do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. 7So now they will be the first to go into exile, \q and the feasting of the loungers will come to an end.

The proud city handed over

8The Lord GOD has sworn by himself, declares the LORD God of Armies: \q I detest the pride of Jacob \q and hate his fortresses; \q I will hand over the city and everything in it. 9If ten people are left in one house, they too will die. 10When a relative who is to burn the dead comes to carry the bodies out of the house, \q he will call to someone hiding deep inside the house, “Is anyone else with you?” When the answer comes, “No,” \q he will say, “Hush! \q We must not mention the name of the LORD.” 11For look, the LORD gives the command, \q and the great house will be broken into fragments, \q and the small house into splinters. 12Do horses gallop over rocky crags? \q Does anyone plow rock with oxen? \q Yet you have made justice into poison \q and the fruit of righteousness into bitter wormwood. 13You rejoice over Lo-debar \q and say, “Did we not capture Karnaim \q with our own strength?” 14For look, I am about to raise up a nation against you, house of Israel, declares the LORD God of Armies, \q and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Wadi of the Arabah.
