1A wise son takes in his father’s correction, \q but a mocker will not listen to a warning. 2People enjoy good things from the fruit of their words, \q but the treacherous hunger for violence. 3Those who watch what they say protect their lives, \q but those who talk carelessly come to ruin. 4The lazy want and want but get nothing, \q while the diligent are fully satisfied. 5The righteous hate lies, \q but the wicked bring disgust and disgrace. 6Righteousness protects the person of integrity, \q but wickedness brings down the sinner. 7Some pretend to be rich but have nothing; \q others pretend to be poor but have great wealth. 8The rich may have to pay a ransom for their lives, \q but the poor never even hear a threat. 9The light of the righteous burns bright, \q but the wicked have a lamp that will be snuffed out. 10Arrogance only stirs up fights, \q but those who take advice are wise. 11Money that comes easily soon dwindles, \q but whoever gathers it bit by bit makes it grow. 12When hope keeps being put off, the heart grows sick, \q but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. 13Whoever scorns instruction will pay the price, \q but whoever respects a command will be rewarded. 14What the wise teach is a spring of life, \q steering people away from the traps of death. 15Good sense wins goodwill, \q but the way of the treacherous is rough going. 16The prudent act with knowledge, \q but fools put their folly on display. 17An unreliable messenger lands in trouble, \q but a trustworthy envoy brings healing. 18Poverty and disgrace come to the one who ignores discipline, \q but whoever accepts correction is honored. 19A wish come true is sweet to the soul, \q but fools hate to turn away from evil. 20Spend time with the wise and you will grow wise; \q keep company with fools and you will get hurt. 21Trouble chases sinners, \q but the righteous are rewarded with good things. 22A good person leaves an inheritance to their grandchildren, \q but the wealth of a sinner ends up with the righteous. 23The fields of the poor may produce plenty of food, \q but injustice sweeps it away. 24Whoever holds back the rod hates their son, \q but the one who loves him is quick to discipline him. 25The righteous have enough to eat, \q but the stomachs of the wicked go empty.
