Sexual sin the church tolerates
1People are actually saying that sexual immorality is going on among you, immorality of a kind that even the Gentiles do not allow: one of you is living with his father’s wife.a 2And you are puffed up! Why were you not grieving instead, so that the man who did this would be removed from among you? 3As for me, I am away in body but there in spirit, and I have already reached my verdict on the man who has done such a thing, as surely as if I were with you. 4When you are gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and my spirit is with you, together with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5this man is to be handed over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, with the aim that on the day of the Lord his spirit may be saved.bcd
Clear out the old yeast
6Your pride is not a good thing. Do you not realize that just a pinch of yeast makes all the dough rise? 7Clear out every trace of the old yeast, so that you can be a fresh batch of dough without yeast, which is what you really are. For Christ has been sacrificed as our Passover lamb.e 8So let us keep the festival, not with old yeast, nor with yeast that is malice and wickedness, but with bread made without yeast: sincerity and truth.
Judging those inside the church
9When I wrote to you in my earlier letter, I told you not to mix with sexually immoral people. 10I did not mean the sexually immoral people of this world in general, nor the greedy and swindlers, nor idolaters. To do that, you would need to leave the world altogether. 11But what I am writing to you now is this: keep away from anyone who goes by the name of brother or sister and yet is sexually immoral, greedy, an idolater, abusive, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even sit down to eat with such a person.f 12Is it my place to judge those outside? Are not those inside the ones you are to judge, 13while God judges those outside?g Drive out the evildoer from among you.
