Jesus prays to be glorified
1After Jesus had said these things, he raised his eyes toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son may glorify you. 2For you have given him authority over all people, in order that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.a 3And eternal life is this: that they know you, the only true God, and the one you sent, Jesus Christ.b 4I have glorified you on earth by completing the work that you gave me to do. 5So now, Father, glorify me yourself, at your side, with the glory that was mine with you before there was a world.
Jesus prays for his disciples
6I have made your name known to the people you gave me from the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me; they have kept your word. 7Now they have come to know that all you have given me is from you.c 8For I have passed on to them the words you gave me, and they have accepted them. They have come to know for certain that I came from you, and they believe that it was you who sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf. I am not asking on the world’s behalf, but on behalf of those whom you have given me, because they belong to you. 10All that is mine is yours, and all that is yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11I am no longer in the world, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, the name you have given me, so that they may be one, just as we are one.d 12While I was with them, I kept them in your name, the name you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one doomed to be lost, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.e 13But now I am coming to you, and I speak these words while still in the world, so that within themselves they may have my joy complete. 14I have given your word to them, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.f 16They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17Set them apart for yourself by the truth; your word is truth. 18Just as you sent me into the world, I in the same way have sent them into the world. 19For their sake I set myself apart, so that they too may be set apart by the truth.g
Jesus prays for all who will believe
20I am not asking on behalf of these alone. My prayer is also for those who are going to believe in me through their message. 21Father, I ask that all of them may be one. Just as you are in me and I am in you, so may they too be in us, so that the world may come to believe that you sent me.hi 22The glory that you have given me I have given to them, so that they may be one just as we are one. 23I am in them and you are in me. So may they be brought to perfect oneness, and the world will know that you sent me and loved them just as you loved me.j 24Father, all that you have given me: it is my will that they too may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you gave me because you loved me before the world was founded.k
25Righteous Father, even though the world has never known you, I have known you, and these disciples have come to know that you sent me. 26I have made your name known to them, and I will go on making it known, so that the love you have had for me may be in them, and I in them.”
