The tomb is empty
1The Sabbath was over, and the first day of the week was just beginning to dawn, when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb.a 2Suddenly the earth shook violently, because an angel of the Lord had come down from heaven. He went to the stone, rolled it back and sat on it. 3He looked like a flash of lightning, and his clothing was snow-white. 4In terror of him the guards trembled, and they became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “You need not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, the one who was crucified. 6He is not here. He has been raised, just as he foretold. Come and see where he was lying.b 7Hurry now, and give his disciples this message: ‘He has been raised from the dead! He is on his way to Galilee ahead of you, and that is where you will see him.’ That is my message to you.” 8Quickly the women left the tomb. Fear and great joy filled them as they ran to tell his disciples. 9All at once Jesus stood in their path. “Greetings!” he said to them. They went to him, held on to his feet and bowed in worship before him. 10Then Jesus told them, “Have no fear. Go and take word to my brothers: they are to set out for Galilee, and there they will see me.”
The guards’ story
11The women were still on their way when some of the soldiers from the guard came into the city and gave the chief priests a full report of what had happened. 12After meeting with the elders and deciding what to do, the chief priests paid the soldiers a large sum of money 13and gave them their story: “Tell people, ‘His disciples came in the night while we were asleep and stole him away.’ 14If the governor hears about this, we will win him over and see that you have nothing to worry about.” 15The soldiers took the money and followed their instructions.
And this is the account that has gone around among Jews up to the present day.
Sent to all the nations
16The eleven disciples made their way to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had appointed for them. 17When they saw him there, they bowed in worship, but some had doubts.c 18Jesus came up to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been placed in my hands. 19Go, then, and make disciples of all the nations: baptize them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teach them to keep everything I have commanded you. And remember this: I myself am with you every day, until the close of the age.”de
