The Lord beside the altar

¹I saw the Lord standing at the altar, and he said: Strike the pillar tops until the thresholds shake, and bring them down on the heads of all the people; \q those who are left I will kill with the sword. \q Not one of them will get away; \q not one will escape alive. ²Though they dig down into Sheol, \q my hand will take them from there; \q though they climb up to the heavens, \q from there I will bring them down. ³Though they hide on the top of Carmel, \q I will search them out and take them from there; \q though they hide from my sight on the floor of the sea, \q there I will order the serpent to bite them. ⁴Though they go into captivity, driven ahead of their enemies, \q there I will command the sword to kill them. \q I will fix my eyes on them for harm and not for good. ⁵The Lord GOD of Armies touches the earth and it melts, \q and all who live in it mourn; \q all of it rises like the Nile \q and sinks again like the Nile of Egypt. ⁶He builds his upper chambers in the heavens \q and sets his vault firmly over the earth. \q He calls up the waters of the sea and pours them out across the face of the earth: the LORD is his name. ⁷Are you not like the Cushites to me, people of Israel? declares the LORD. \q Did I not bring Israel up out of Egypt, \q and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir? ⁸Look, the Lord GOD’s eyes are on the sinful kingdom, \q and I will wipe it off the face of the earth. \q Yet I will not destroy the house of Jacob completely, declares the LORD. ⁹For look, I am about to give the command: \q I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations \q the way grain is shaken in a sieve, \q and not a pebble will fall to the ground.^{a 10}All the sinners among my people will die by the sword, \q those who say, “Disaster will not overtake us or come upon us.” ¹¹On that day \q I will raise up the fallen booth of David. \q I will wall up its gaps and restore its ruins \q and rebuild it as it was in days long ago, ¹²so that they may possess what is left of Edom \q and every nation that is called by my name, \q declares the LORD, who will do this.^b

The days are coming

¹³The days are coming, declares the LORD, \q when the one who plows will catch up with the one who reaps, \q and the one who treads grapes with the one who sows the seed. \q The mountains will drip with sweet wine, \q and all the hills will flow with it. ¹⁴I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel. \q They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; \q they will plant vineyards and drink the wine from them; \q they will lay out gardens and eat their fruit. ¹⁵I will plant them in their own land, \q and they will never again be pulled up from the land I have given them, \q says the LORD your God.
