The leaders plot, and Judas joins them
1Now the time was drawing near for the feast of Unleavened Bread, which is known as the Passover. 2The chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people.
3Then Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve. 4He went off and talked with the chief priests and the temple officers about how he could betray him to them. 5They were glad and agreed to pay him money. 6He accepted, and from then on he looked for a good chance to betray him to them when no crowd was around.
Preparing the Passover
7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, the day when the Passover lamb had to be killed as a sacrifice. 8So Jesus sent Peter and John with these instructions: “Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat.” 9They asked him, “Where do you want us to get it ready?” 10He told them, “As you go into the city, you will be met by a man who is carrying a jar of water. Follow him into whatever house he goes into. 11Say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Which is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ 12He will show you a large room upstairs, with everything laid out. Get the meal ready there.” 13So they went off and found it all just as he had said, and they got the Passover ready.
The Passover meal with the apostles
14When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. 15And he said to them, “How I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer! 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”ab 17Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and handed it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”c 20In the same way he took the cup after the meal, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you. 21Yet the hand of the man who is betraying me is here with me on the table. 22The Son of Man is going the way that has been marked out for him. But how terrible it will be for that man who betrays him!” 23They began to ask one another which of them it could possibly be who was going to do such a thing.
The greatest is the one who serves
24A quarrel also broke out among them over which of them was to be thought the greatest. 25But he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles act as lords over their people, and those who hold power over them are given the title ‘Benefactor’. 26With you it must not be this way. Instead, the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the one in charge like the one who waits on others. 27Think about it: who is greater, the guest who lies at the table, or the one who serves the meal? Surely the one at the table. Yet here I am among you as the one who serves.
28You are the ones who have stood by me through my trials. 29And just as my Father has granted me a kingdom, so I grant one to you. 30You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31Simon, Simon, Satan has demanded to have all of you, to sift you like wheat.d 32But I have prayed for you, so that your faith will not give out. And you, once you have turned back, must strengthen your brothers.” 33Peter answered him, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” 34Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, before a rooster crows today, you will have said three times that you do not know me.”
Purse, bag and sword
35Then he said to them, “When I sent you out with no money bag, no traveler’s bag and no sandals, were you short of anything?” They said, “Not a thing.” 36He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money bag must take it along, and a traveler’s bag too. And whoever has no sword should sell their cloak and buy one.ef 37For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: ‘He was counted among the lawless.’ Yes, what was written about me is reaching its end.” 38They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “That is enough.”g
Not my will but yours
39Then he left and went, as was his habit, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples went with him. 40When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41Then he went off from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Yet let your will be done, not mine.” 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength.h 44In his anguish he prayed all the more intensely, and his sweat became like thick drops of blood dripping down onto the ground.i 45When he got up from prayer and came back to the disciples, he found them asleep, worn down by their grief. 46And he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you will not come into temptation.”
Judas comes with a crowd
47While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came up to Jesus to kiss him. 48But Jesus said to him, “Judas, is it with a kiss that you betray the Son of Man?” 49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50And one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus said, “Enough of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.j 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard and the elders who had come out against him, “Did you have to come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a bandit? 53Day after day I was with you in the temple, and you did not lift a hand against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Peter’s three denials
54They seized him, led him away and brought him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance. 55People had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down around it, and Peter sat among them. 56A servant girl saw him sitting in the firelight. She stared at him and said, “This man was with him too.” 57But he denied it. “Woman, I do not know him,” he said. 58A little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Friend, I am not.” 59About an hour later another man insisted, “This is the truth: this fellow was with him. He is a Galilean too.” 60But Peter said, “Friend, I have no idea what you are talking about.” At that very moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord’s words, how he had told him, “Today, before a rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 62He went outside and wept bitterly.
Blindfolded and mocked
63The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him as they beat him. 64They covered his eyes and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who was it that struck you?” 65And they said many other insulting things against him.
Questioned by the council
66At daybreak the elders of the people met together, both chief priests and scribes, and they took him away to their council. 67They said, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe. 68And if I ask you a question, you will not answer.k 69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70They all said, “So you are the Son of God?” He answered them, “You say that I am.”l 71Then they said, “Why do we need any more witnesses? We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth.”
