A poor widow’s gift
1Jesus looked up and watched as rich people dropped their gifts into the temple’s offering chests. 2He also noticed a needy widow drop in two pennies. 3Then he said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has given more than all the rest. 4Every one of them gave out of their surplus. But she, out of her need, has given the whole of what she had to live on.”
Not one stone on another
5Some people were talking about the temple: how fine its stones were, and how it was decorated with gifts given to God. Jesus said, 6“You are looking at all this. But days are coming when it will all be torn down, and not a stone will stay standing on another.”
7They put a question to him: “Teacher, when will these things be? And what sign will there be when they are about to take place?” 8He answered, “Take care that no one leads you astray. Many will come claiming my name and saying, ‘I am the one!’ and, ‘The time has come near!’ Do not go after them. 9When you hear about wars and rebellions, do not panic. All this has to happen first, but it does not mean that the end comes at once.” 10Then he went on to tell them, “One nation will go to war with another, and one kingdom with another. 11There will be powerful earthquakes, and in place after place famines and diseases. Fearful things will happen, and great signs will appear in the sky.
12Before all that, however, they will arrest you and hunt you down. They will hand you over to synagogues and to prisons, and you will be led off to stand before kings and governors for the sake of my name. 13This will give you the chance to bear witness.a 14So settle it in your hearts: do not plan your defense in advance. 15I myself will give you the words and the wisdom to speak, and not one of your opponents will be able to stand against them or argue back. 16You will be handed over even by your own parents and brothers and sisters, your relatives and your friends, and some of you they will kill. 17You will be hated by everyone on account of my name. 18Yet not a single hair of your head will be lost. 19Hold out to the end, and so win your lives.b
Jerusalem surrounded
20When you see Jerusalem with armies encamped all around it, then be sure that it will soon be laid waste. 21Then people in Judea should run for the hills. Those inside the city should leave it, and those out in the fields should not go back in. 22For these are the days of punishment, when everything that is written will come true. 23How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant or nursing a baby! Great hardship will come on the land, and wrath on this people. 24They will be cut down by the sword and carried off as captives to every nation. Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles have run their course.c
The Son of Man comes in a cloud
25Signs will appear in the sun, the moon and the stars. On the earth whole nations will be gripped with distress, not knowing where to turn as the sea roars and heaves. 26Fear will drain the strength out of people as they wait for what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27And then people will see the Son of Man come in a cloud with power and with great glory. 28As soon as these things start to happen, straighten up and look up, for the day of your redemption is almost here.”
Learn from the fig tree
29He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and at all the trees. 30Once they burst into leaf, you only need to look at them to know that summer is near. 31It is the same with you. When you see these things happening, be sure of this: the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, all of this will happen before this generation is gone.d 33Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will last forever.
Stay awake and pray
34Be on your guard. Do not let your hearts grow dull with wild parties and drinking and the worries of everyday life, or that day will catch you off guard, 35like a trap that snaps shut. It will come on everyone who lives anywhere on earth. 36Keep watch at all times, and pray for strength to come safely through all that is going to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”e
37By day Jesus was teaching in the temple. At night he would go out of the city and spend the night on the hill known as the Mount of Olives. 38At dawn all the people would come to him in the temple to listen.
