The two witnesses

I was given a measuring rod like a staff and told, “Get up and measure God’s temple and the altar, and count those who worship there. 2But leave out the court outside the temple; do not measure it, for it has been handed over to the nations, and they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. 3I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth.”

These two are the olive trees and the lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. 5Should anyone want to hurt them, fire comes out of their mouths and burns up their enemies. Whoever wants to hurt them is bound to be killed like this. 6It is in their power to close the sky, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; they also have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and power to strike the earth with every kind of plague whenever they choose.

When they have completed their testimony, the beast that rises from the abyss will wage war against them, overpower them, and kill them. 8Their bodies will lie in the open street of the great city, which in a prophetic sense is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord too was crucified. 9People from among the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations look on their bodies for three and a half days and will not let them be laid in a tomb. 10Those who live on the earth rejoice over their death and make merry; they will exchange gifts, because these two prophets had tormented the people of the earth.

After the three and a half days, though, the breath of life came into them from God; they rose to their feet, and those watching were seized by great fear. 12A great voice from heaven called to them, “Come up here!” They heard it, and up they went into heaven in the cloud, with their enemies watching them. 13In that same hour a great earthquake struck, a tenth of the city fell, and the quake killed 7,000 people. The rest were filled with fear and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The second woe is over. Look: the third woe is coming soon.

The seventh trumpet

Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and loud voices in heaven said: “The rule over the world now belongs to our Lord and to his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.”

Then the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones in God’s presence threw themselves face down and worshiped God. 17“Lord God, the Almighty,” they said, “the one who is and who was, we thank you, for you have taken your great power into your hands and begun your reign. 18The nations raged, but your wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, for your servants the prophets to be rewarded, and your holy people, and all who fear your name, small and great, and the time to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

God’s temple in heaven was thrown open, and inside it the ark of his covenant appeared. Lightning flashed; there were loud sounds and thunder, an earthquake, and huge hail.
