The devil tests Jesus in the wilderness

1Jesus came back from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit led him through the wilderness 2for forty days, while the devil put him to the test. He went without food the whole time, and when the days were over, he was hungry. 3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order this stone to turn into bread.” 4Jesus answered him, “It stands written, ‘A person does not live on bread alone.’”

5Then the devil took him up high, and in a single instant he let him see every kingdom of the world. 6And the devil said to him, “I will give you power over all of them, and all their glory. It has been handed over to me, and I hand it on to whoever I please. 7So if you will bow down to me in worship, all of it will belong to you.” 8Jesus answered him, “It stands written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve no one but him.’”

9Next the devil brought him to Jerusalem and set him on the high corner of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he told him, “jump down from here. 10For Scripture says, ‘He will give his angels orders about you, to keep you safe,’ 11and, ‘They will hold you up in their hands, so that your foot will not strike a stone.’” 12Jesus answered him, “It has been said, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 13Once the devil had tried every kind of test, he left him to wait for a better moment.

Teaching in Galilee

14Jesus went back to Galilee, and the power of the Spirit was with him. Word about him went out through all the country around. 15He kept teaching in their synagogues, and all who heard him gave him praise.

Jesus reads Isaiah in Nazareth

16Then he came to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. On the Sabbath he went to the synagogue, as he always did, and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17Someone handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He opened it out and found the passage that says: 18“The Spirit of the Lord rests on me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce freedom to the captives and sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free, 19and to announce the year when the Lord shows favor.” 20He rolled the scroll up again, handed it back to the attendant, and took his seat. All the eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21He began by telling them, “Today, as you have been listening, these words of Scripture have come true.” 22Everyone there was speaking in his favor, and they wondered at the words of grace that came from his mouth. And they kept saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this saying to me: ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your own town the things we heard you did in Capernaum.’” 24He added, “Truly I tell you, a prophet is never welcome in his own hometown. 25But I tell you in truth: in Elijah’s day, when the sky stayed shut for three years and six months and a great famine struck the whole land, Israel had many widows. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow at Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27And in the time of the prophet Elisha Israel had many people with leprosy, yet not one of them was made clean except Naaman, a man from Syria.” 28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was filled with fury. 29They rose up and threw him out of the town. They led him to the edge of the hill where their town stood, meaning to hurl him down from there. 30But he passed through the middle of them and went away.

An unclean spirit driven out at Capernaum

31Then he went down to the Galilean town of Capernaum. There he would teach the people on the Sabbath. 32His teaching left them astounded, for there was authority in what he said. 33In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he shouted with a loud voice, 34“Ah! What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!” 35Jesus gave it a stern command: “Be quiet! Come out of him!” The demon hurled the man down in the middle of the room, then left him, and he was not hurt at all. 36Amazement came over everyone. “What is this message?” they asked one another. “He gives commands to the unclean spirits with authority and power, and out they go!” 37And talk about him spread to every place in the region around.

Simon’s mother-in-law healed

38From the synagogue Jesus went to Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was in the grip of a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39He stood over her and commanded the fever to leave, and it left her. Immediately she got up and started looking after them.

Many healed at sunset

40As the sun went down, all who had people at home sick with one disease or another brought them to him. He put his hands on each one and made them well. 41Demons also left many people, crying out, “You are the Son of God!” He silenced them with a rebuke and did not let them talk, for they knew he was Christ.

Good news for the other towns

42When day came, he went out to a deserted place. But the crowds went searching for him. They found him and tried to hold on to him so that he would not go away from them. 43But he told them, “I have to bring the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well. This is what I was sent to do.” 44And he continued to proclaim his message in the synagogues of Judea.
