Stumbling, forgiveness and faith
1Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that trip people up and lead them into sin will certainly come. But how terrible for the one who brings them! 2It would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to make one of these little ones stumble. 3Be on your guard. When your brother or sister does wrong, warn them. Then if they repent, forgive them.a 4Seven times in one day they may wrong you, and seven times come back and say, ‘I repent.’ Even so, forgive them.”
5The apostles said to the Lord, “Give us more faith!” 6The Lord answered, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could tell this mulberry tree, ‘Tear yourself up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would do as you say.
Servants who only did their duty
7Imagine that one of you has a servant who has been out plowing or tending the sheep. When he comes in from the field, will you tell him, ‘Come straight in and take your place at the table’? 8Will you not tell him instead, ‘Make me something to eat. Then tie on your apron and serve me while I have my meal. You can eat and drink afterward’? 9The master does not owe the servant any thanks for doing what he was ordered to do, does he? 10It is the same with you. When you have done everything you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are unworthy servants. We have done no more than we were bound to do.’”
Ten healed, one returns
11As Jesus made his way toward Jerusalem, he went through the region between Samaria and Galilee.b 12As he came into a village, ten men with leprosy came toward him. They kept their distance 13and called out loudly, “Jesus! Master! Have mercy on us!” 14Jesus saw them and told them, “Go and let the priests examine you.” On their way there, they were made clean. 15One of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, giving glory to God with a loud voice. 16He fell face down at the feet of Jesus, thanking him. And the man was a Samaritan. 17Jesus responded, “Ten men were made clean, were they not? So where are the other nine? 18Is this outsider the only one who came back to give glory to God?” 19Then he told him, “Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has made you well.”c
Where the kingdom of God is
20Once the Pharisees asked Jesus when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, “The kingdom of God does not come in a way you can watch for and track. 21People will not say, ‘It is here!’ or ‘It is over there!’ For the kingdom of God is among you.”d
The day the Son of Man is revealed
22Then he said to the disciples, “There will be days when you ache to see even one day of the Son of Man, but you will not get to see it. 23People will tell you, ‘Look over there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Do not go out, and do not run after them. 24When lightning flashes, it lights up the sky from one edge to the other. That is how the Son of Man will be on his day.e 25But before that, he must go through great suffering and be turned away by the people of this generation. 26What happened in Noah’s time will happen again in the days of the Son of Man. 27People were eating and drinking, taking wives and being given as wives, right up to the day Noah went into the ark. Then the flood came and wiped them all out. 28It was the same in Lot’s time. People ate and drank, bought and sold, planted and built. 29Then came the day Lot walked out of Sodom. Fire and sulfur fell like rain from heaven, and every one of them was destroyed. 30That is how it will be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31On that day anyone up on the roof must not go down into the house to get their things. In the same way, anyone out in the field must not turn around to fetch what is behind. 32Remember Lot’s wife. 33Anyone who tries to hold on to their life will lose it, and anyone who loses it will keep it alive. 34I tell you, that night two people will be sleeping in one bed. One will be taken, and the other will be left behind.f 35Two women will be grinding grain together. One will be taken, and the other will be left behind.”g 37They asked him, “Where will this happen, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the corpse lies, there the vultures will flock together.”
