Serious skin disease

1The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, 2“If a swelling, a scab or a bright spot appears on the skin of someone’s body and turns into what may be a sore of serious skin disease, the person is to be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons, the priests. 3The priest is to look closely at the sore. If the hair in it has turned white and it seems to go deeper than the surface of the skin, it is a sore of serious skin disease. Once he has seen it, the priest is to declare the person unclean. 4If, however, there is a white bright spot on the skin that does not seem to go below the surface, and its hair has not turned white, the priest is to shut the person away for seven days. 5On the seventh day the priest is to look at the person again. If in his judgment the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to shut them away for another seven days. 6When the second seven days are over, the priest is to look once more. If the sore has grown dim and not spread over the skin, it is merely a scab, and the priest is to declare the person clean. After washing their clothes, they are clean. 7But if the scab spreads in the skin after they have shown themselves to the priest and been declared clean, they must come before the priest again. 8If the priest sees that the scab has spread in the skin, he is to declare the person unclean: it is a serious skin disease.

9Anyone who has a sore of serious skin disease is to be brought to the priest. 10The priest is to look. If there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11it is a long-standing serious skin disease in the skin of the body. The priest is to declare the person unclean without shutting them away, for there is no doubt that they are unclean. 12If the disease breaks out all over the skin and covers the whole skin of the person with the sore, from head to foot, wherever the priest looks, 13the priest is to look, and if the disease has covered the whole body, he is to declare the person clean. It has all turned white; they are clean. 14But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. 15The priest is to look at the raw flesh and declare the person unclean. Raw flesh is unclean; it is a serious skin disease. 16But if the raw flesh changes again and turns white, they are to go to the priest. 17The priest is to examine them, and if the sore has turned white, he is to declare the person with the sore clean. They are clean.

Boils and burns

18When someone has a boil on their skin and it has healed, 19and a white swelling or a reddish-white bright spot appears where the boil was, they are to show it to the priest. 20The priest is to examine it. If it looks lower than the skin around it and its hair has turned white, the priest is to declare the person unclean. It is a sore of serious skin disease that has broken out where the boil was. 21But if the priest finds no white hair in it, and it is not lower than the skin, and it has faded, he is to shut the person away for seven days. 22If it spreads in the skin, the priest is to declare the person unclean. It is a sore of the disease. 23If the bright spot stays put and does not spread, it is the boil’s scar, and the priest is to declare the person clean.

24Or when someone has a burn on their skin, and the raw place of the burn becomes a reddish-white or white bright spot, 25the priest is to look at it. If the hair in the bright spot has turned white and the spot looks deeper than the skin, it is a serious skin disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest is to declare the person unclean; it is a sore of serious skin disease. 26But if the priest finds no white hair in the bright spot, and it is not lower than the skin, and it has faded, he is to shut the person away for seven days. 27On the seventh day the priest is to look at them. If it has spread in the skin, the priest is to declare the person unclean; it is a sore of serious skin disease. 28But if the bright spot stays where it is, has not spread in the skin, and has faded, it is the swelling from the burn. The priest is to declare the person clean, because it is the scar of the burn.

Sores on the head or in the beard

29When a man or a woman has a sore on the head or in the beard, 30the priest is to examine the sore. If it looks deeper than the skin and there is thin yellow hair in it, the priest is to declare the person unclean. It is a scaly itch, a serious skin disease of the head or beard. 31But if the priest examines the sore of the scaly itch and it does not look deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, he is to shut the person with the sore away for seven days. 32On the seventh day the priest is to look at the sore. If the scaly itch has not spread, and no yellow hair has appeared in it, and it does not look deeper than the skin, 33the person is to shave, but not the place where the scaly itch is, and the priest is to shut them away for another seven days. 34On the seventh day the priest is to look at the scaly itch. If it has not spread in the skin and does not look deeper than the skin, he is to declare the person clean. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 35But if the scaly itch does spread in the skin after they have been declared clean, 36and the priest examines them and finds that it has spread in the skin, he need not look for yellow hair. The person is unclean. 37But if in the priest’s judgment the scaly itch is unchanged, and black hair has grown in it, it has healed. The person is clean, and the priest is to declare them clean.

Rashes and baldness

38When a man or a woman has bright spots on the skin, white bright spots, 39and the priest finds that the spots on their skin are a dull white, it is a rash, nothing more, breaking out on the skin. The person is clean.

40When a man loses the hair of his head, he is bald, but he is clean. 41If he loses the hair at the front of his head, he is bald at the forehead, but he is clean. 42But if a reddish-white sore appears on his bald head or forehead, it is a serious skin disease breaking out on his bald head or forehead. 43The priest is to examine him. If the swollen sore on his bald head or forehead is reddish-white, looking like a serious skin disease on the body, 44he is a man with a serious skin disease and he is unclean. The priest must declare him unclean; the sore is on his head. 45The person who has the sore of serious skin disease is to go about in torn clothes, with the hair of the head left loose. They are to cover their upper lip and shout, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ 46For the whole time the sore is on them they are unclean. Being unclean, they are to live by themselves, making their home outside the camp.

Mold in clothing and leather

47When a patch of mold is found in clothing, whether wool or linen clothing, 48or in the warp or the weft of linen or wool, or in leather or anything made of leather, 49and the patch in the clothing or leather, in the warp or weft, or in any leather article is greenish or reddish, it is a patch of mold and must be shown to the priest. 50The priest is to examine the patch and shut the article away for seven days. 51On the seventh day he is to look at the patch. If it has spread in the clothing, the warp or weft, or the leather, whatever the leather is used for, it is a spreading mold, and the article is unclean. 52He must burn the clothing, the woolen or linen warp or weft, or the leather article that has the patch in it. Because it is a spreading mold, it must be burned up. 53But if the priest examines it and the patch has not spread in the clothing, the warp or weft, or the leather article, 54the priest is to order the article with the patch washed and shut it away for another seven days. 55After it has been washed, the priest is to look at the patch again. If its appearance has not changed, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. You must burn it; it is a rot that has eaten into the back or the front of it. 56But if the priest looks and the patch has faded after being washed, he is to tear the patch out of the clothing, the leather, or the warp or weft. 57If it appears again in the clothing, the warp or weft, or the leather article, it is breaking out afresh, and you must burn whatever has the patch in it. 58But the clothing, the warp or weft, or the leather article that you wash and from which the patch has gone, is to be washed a second time, and it will be clean. 59This is the law for mold in clothing of wool or linen, in the warp or weft, or in any article of leather, for declaring it clean or unclean.”
