Vows of people

1The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, 2“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: ‘When anyone makes a special vow to give the LORD the value of a person, 3the valuation for a man from twenty to sixty years of age is to be fifty shekels of silver, measured by the sanctuary shekel. 4If it is a woman, the valuation is thirty shekels. 5For someone from five to twenty years of age, the valuation is twenty shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female. 6For a child from one month to five years old, the valuation is five shekels of silver for a male and three shekels of silver for a female. 7For someone sixty years old or more, the valuation is fifteen shekels for a man and ten shekels for a woman. 8But if the one who vows is too poor to pay the valuation, the person is to be brought before the priest, and the priest will set a value for them, fixing the amount by what the one who vowed is able to pay.

Vows of animals, houses and fields

9If the vow is of an animal of the kind that may be presented as an offering to the LORD, any such animal given to the LORD becomes holy. 10The owner must not swap it or put another in its place, a good animal for a poor one or a poor one for a good one. If they do replace one animal with another, both the first animal and the one put in its place will be holy. 11If the vow is of an unclean animal, of the kind that may not be presented as an offering to the LORD, the animal is to be brought before the priest, 12and the priest will set its value according to whether it is good or poor. The value he sets will stand. 13If the owner does redeem it, they must pay the valuation and a fifth more. 14When anyone consecrates a house as holy to the LORD, the priest is to judge whether it is in good or poor condition and set its value. The value the priest sets will stand. 15If the one who consecrated the house wants to redeem it, they must pay its value in silver and a fifth more, and it will be theirs again. 16If anyone consecrates to the LORD part of a field that is their family’s land, its value will follow the seed needed to sow it: fifty shekels of silver for about 6 bushels of barley seed. 17If the field is consecrated from the Year of Jubilee onward, the full valuation will stand. 18But if the field is consecrated after the Jubilee, the priest will work out the price by the years left until the next Year of Jubilee, and the valuation will be reduced to match. 19If the one who consecrated the field does redeem it, they must pay its value in silver and a fifth more, and it will remain theirs. 20But if they do not redeem the field, or if the field has been sold to someone else, it can never again be redeemed. 21When the field is released in the Jubilee, it will be holy to the LORD, like a field that is devoted to him. It will belong to the priest as his own land. 22If someone consecrates to the LORD a field they have bought, which is not part of their family’s land, 23the priest will work out the amount of the valuation up to the Year of Jubilee, and that person must pay the valuation on the same day as a holy gift to the LORD. 24In the Year of Jubilee the field will go back to the one from whom it was bought, the one whose family land it is. 25Every valuation is to be by the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.

Firstborn, devoted things and tithes

26But no one may consecrate the firstborn of an animal, since a firstborn already belongs to the LORD. Whether it is from the cattle or the flock, it is the LORD’s. 27If it is an unclean animal, the owner may buy it back at its valuation, adding a fifth to it. If it is not redeemed, it is to be sold at its valuation. 28But anything that anyone devotes to the LORD from what they own, whether human or animal or a field they hold as family land, may not be sold and may not be bought back. All that is devoted is most holy to the LORD. 29When a human being has been placed under the ban for destruction, no ransom may be paid for them; they must be put to death. 30All the tithe of the land belongs to the LORD, both grain from what is sown and fruit from the trees. It is holy to the LORD. 31If anyone wants to redeem any of their tithe, they must add a fifth to its value. 32As for the herd and the flock, of all the animals that pass under the rod as they are counted, every tenth one will be holy to the LORD. 33The owner is not to look over the animals to sort good from poor, and must not exchange one for another. If they do make an exchange, the animal and the one put in its place will both be holy, and neither can be redeemed.’” 34These are the commandments the LORD laid on Moses for the Israelites, on Mount Sinai.
