The death of Nadab and Abihu
1Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his own censer. They put fire in it, laid incense on the fire, and offered before the LORD an improper fire, one he had not commanded them to bring.a 2Then fire went out from before the LORD and devoured them, and they died in the presence of the LORD. 3Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant when he said, ‘Through those who come near me I will show that I am holy, and in the sight of all the people I will show my glory.’” And Aaron said nothing.b 4Moses sent for Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, who was Aaron’s uncle. He told them, “Come forward and take your relatives from in front of the sanctuary, and carry them out of the camp.” 5They came forward and carried them out of the camp in their own tunics, just as Moses had said. 6Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair hang loose or tear your clothes in mourning, or you will die, and he will be angry with the whole congregation. Your relatives, the whole house of Israel, may weep over the burning the LORD has brought about. 7Do not leave your place at the entrance of the tent of meeting, or you will die, because you bear the LORD’s anointing oil.” They did as Moses said.
No wine for priests on duty
8The LORD spoke to Aaron. He said, 9“Whenever you or your sons go into the tent of meeting, you must drink no wine or beer, or you will die. This is a permanent rule for all your generations, 10so that you can tell apart what is holy and what is common, what is unclean and what is clean, 11and so that you can teach the Israelites all the rules the LORD has given them through Moses.”
Eating the priests’ share
12Moses said to Aaron and to his sons who were left, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering that remains from the LORD’s food offerings and eat it, made without yeast, beside the altar, because it is most holy. 13Eat it in a holy place, because it is the share set aside for you and your sons from the LORD’s food offerings. This is what I have been commanded. 14But the breast of the wave offering and the thigh given as a contribution you may eat in any ceremonially clean place, you and your sons and daughters with you. They have been given to you and your children as your share from the peace offerings of the Israelites. 15The thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering are to be brought along with the fat portions for the food offerings, and waved before the LORD as a wave offering. They will belong to you and to your sons with you as your permanent share, as the LORD has commanded.” 16Moses made a careful search for the goat of the sin offering, and it turned out that it had been burned. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the two sons of Aaron who were left, and he said, 17“Why did you not eat the sin offering in the holy area? It is most holy, and he has given it to you so that you may carry the guilt of the congregation and make atonement for them before the LORD.c 18Its blood was not brought inside the sanctuary, so you certainly should have eaten the goat in the holy area, as I commanded.” 19Aaron answered Moses, “Look, this very day they brought their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, and still such things have happened to me. Had I eaten sin offering today, would that have been right in the eyes of the LORD?”d 20When Moses heard this, it seemed right to him.
