Who may eat the holy food
1The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, 2“Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy gifts that the Israelites set apart for me, and so not profane my holy name. I am the LORD. 3Say to them: ‘For all your generations, if any man among your descendants comes near the holy gifts that the Israelites consecrate to the LORD while he is unclean, that person must be cut off from before me. I am the LORD.’ 4No man descended from Aaron who has a serious skin disease or a discharge may eat any of the holy food until he is clean. Nor may one who touches anything made unclean by a dead body, or a man who has an emission of semen,a 5or one who touches any swarming creature that makes him unclean, or a human being through whom he becomes unclean in any of the ways a person can be unclean, 6the one who has touched it stays unclean until evening and may not eat any of the holy food until he has washed his body in water. 7Once the sun has set he is clean, and then he may eat of the holy food, since that is what he lives on. 8He must not eat an animal that has died or one torn by wild beasts, and so become unclean by it. I am the LORD. 9The priests must guard what I have entrusted to them, or they will bear sin because of the holy food and die for having profaned it. I am the LORD, who makes them holy. 10No layperson may eat holy food. Neither a resident staying with a priest nor a worker he hires may eat it. 11But a person whom a priest has bought with his money may eat of it, and so may the slaves born in his house. They may share his food. 12A priest’s daughter who is married to a layman may not eat from the holy portions set aside as contributions. 13But a priest’s daughter who has lost her husband through death or divorce, who has no children, and who has returned to her father’s house as when she was a girl, may again share her father’s food. Still, no layperson may eat it.
14If anyone eats holy food unintentionally, that person is to repay the priest for the holy food, adding a fifth to it. 15The priests must not profane the holy gifts that the Israelites set aside for the LORD, 16for if they let the people eat their holy gifts, they would load them with guilt that calls for a guilt offering. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.”b
Offerings must be without defect
17The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, 18“Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites, and tell them: ‘Anyone from the people of Israel or from the outsiders living in Israel who presents an offering to the LORD as a burnt offering, whether for a vow they have made or as a freewill offering, 19then, to be accepted for you, it must be a male without defect from the cattle, the sheep or the goats. 20Whatever has a defect you must not offer; it will not win acceptance for you. 21If anyone brings the LORD a peace offering from the herd or the flock, whether to pay a vow or as a freewill offering, the animal must be without defect if it is to be accepted. There must be nothing at all wrong with it.c 22You must not present to the LORD an animal that is blind, has a broken limb or is maimed, or one with a running sore, a festering rash or scabs. Do not give any of them to the LORD as a food offering on the altar.de 23If an ox or a sheep has a limb too long or stunted, you may still give it as a freewill offering. For a vow, though, it will not be accepted.f 24Do not bring the LORD an animal whose testicles have been squeezed, crushed, torn or cut off. Do not do so in your land.gh 25Do not take any of these animals from a foreigner either, and present them as the food of your God. They are damaged; they have a defect and will not be accepted for you.’”
More rules for offerings
26The LORD spoke to Moses. He said, 27“A newborn calf, lamb or kid is to be left with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be accepted as an offering, a food offering to the LORD. 28Whether from the herd or the flock, a mother animal and its young must not both be slaughtered in a single day. 29When you sacrifice a thanksgiving offering to the LORD, do it in the way that will gain acceptance for you. 30Eat it on the day it is offered, and keep none of it until the next morning. I am the LORD. 31You are to keep my commandments and carry them out. I am the LORD. 32Never profane my holy name; among the Israelites I must be treated as holy. I am the LORD, who makes you holy, 33who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD.”
