Garments for the priests

1Now bring your brother Aaron near to you, and his sons with him, out from among the Israelites, to serve me as priests: Aaron and his sons Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2You are to make holy garments for your brother Aaron, to clothe him with glory and beauty. 3Speak to all who are wise of heart, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, and have them make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, so that he may serve me as priest. 4The garments they are to make are these: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a tunic of checkered weave, a turban and a sash. They will make holy garments for your brother Aaron and for his sons, for their service to me as priests. 5The workers are to take the gold, the blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and the fine linen.

The ephod

6They are to make the ephod of gold, of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of fine twisted linen, the work of a skilled designer. 7Two shoulder pieces are to be joined to its two ends, so that it is fastened together. 8The band woven to fasten it, which goes around it, must be made in the same way and form a single piece with it, of gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and fine twisted linen. 9Take two onyx stones, and on them engrave the names of the sons of Israel, 10six of their names on the first stone and the other six names on the second, in the order they were born. 11Cut the names of the sons of Israel into the two stones with the skill of a stone engraver cutting a seal. Enclose the stones in settings of gold filigree. 12Put the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel. Aaron will carry their names before the LORD on his two shoulders, for remembrance.

13Make settings of gold filigree, 14and two chains of pure gold, braided the way cord is braided, and fasten these corded chains to the settings.

The breastpiece of judgment

15Make a breastpiece of judgment, the work of a skilled designer. Make it in the same way as the ephod, of gold, of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of fine twisted linen. 16It is to be square and folded double, about 9 inches long and about 9 inches wide. 17Fill it with mounted stones in four rows. In the first row are to be a carnelian, a topaz and a beryl; 18in the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire and an emerald; 19in the third row, a jacinth, an agate and an amethyst; 20and in the fourth row, a chrysolite, an onyx and a jasper. They are to be mounted in gold settings. 21The stones are to bear the names of the sons of Israel, twelve stones for their twelve names. Cut each one like a seal with its own name, for the twelve tribes. 22On the breastpiece make chains of pure gold, twisted like cords. 23Make two gold rings for the breastpiece, and put the two rings at two of its corners. 24Fasten the two gold cords to the two rings at the corners of the breastpiece. 25Fasten the other two ends of the two cords to the two settings, and so attach them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front. 26Make two gold rings as well, and set them at the two lower ends of the breastpiece, on the edge that lies against the ephod, on the inner side. 27Make yet another two gold rings. Put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod toward the bottom of its front side, close to where it is joined, above the woven band of the ephod. 28Bind the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord, so that it stays on the woven band of the ephod and does not come away from it. 29So Aaron will carry the names of the sons of Israel on the breastpiece of judgment over his heart whenever he goes into the holy place, to keep them in remembrance before the LORD at all times. 30Put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastpiece of judgment, so that they are over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the LORD. So Aaron will always carry, over his heart before the LORD, the judgment of the Israelites.

The robe

31The robe that goes under the ephod is to be made wholly of blue. 32In the middle there is to be an opening for the head. Around the opening put a hem of woven work, like the neck of a coat of armor, so that it will not rip. 33Around its hem make pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, all the way around, with gold bells between them all around, 34a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe. 35The robe is to be on Aaron when he ministers. As he enters the holy place to stand before the LORD, and as he leaves, its ringing will be heard, and so he will not die.

The gold plate and other garments

36You are to make a plate of pure gold and cut on it, the way a seal is cut, the words ‘Holy to the LORD.’ 37Put it on a cord of blue and set it on the turban. It belongs on the turban’s front. 38Aaron is to wear it on his forehead. In this way he will carry the guilt of the holy things the Israelites consecrate, whatever holy gifts they bring. It will rest on his forehead at all times, so that they find acceptance before the LORD. 39Weave the tunic in a checkered weave from fine linen. The turban too is to be of fine linen. For the sash, make one worked in colors by an embroiderer. 40Aaron’s sons are also to have tunics; make sashes and caps for them as well, for glory and for beauty. 41Clothe your brother Aaron, and his sons with him, in these garments. Then anoint them, ordain them and consecrate them to serve me as priests. 42Make them linen undergarments to cover the nakedness of their bodies; they are to reach from the hips down to the thighs. 43These are to be on Aaron and his sons when they go into the tent of meeting, or when they come near the altar to serve in the holy place; then they will not bring guilt on themselves and die. It is a statute for all time for Aaron and for his descendants after him.
