The testing of Jesus
1Then the Spirit led Jesus up into the wilderness, where the devil would tempt him. 2He fasted forty days and forty nights, and at the end of it he was famished. 3Then the tempter approached him. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5Then the devil brought him to the holy city and set him on the high corner of the temple. 6“If you are the Son of God,” he told him, “jump down. For Scripture says, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you,’ and, ‘They will catch you in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7Jesus answered him, “Scripture says something else as well: ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”
8Then the devil led him up a very high mountain and showed him every kingdom of the world in all its glory. 9“I will give you all of this,” he told him, “if you kneel down and worship me.” 10“Get away, Satan!” Jesus said to him. “For Scripture says, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve no one but him.’” 11Then the devil left him, and angels came and took care of him.
Jesus begins in Galilee
12News reached Jesus that John had been arrested, and he went back to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, a town by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14This was so that the word spoken through the prophet Isaiah would be fulfilled: 15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee where the Gentiles live: 16the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, and for those who sat in the land of death’s shadow, light rose like the dawn.”
17From then on Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
The first disciples
18As Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he noticed two brothers, Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew his brother, throwing a net into the water. They fished for a living. 19“Come, follow me,” he said to them, “and I will make you fishers of people.” 20They left their nets at once and followed him.
21A little farther on he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in their boat with Zebedee their father, repairing their nets. He called them. 22They left the boat and their father without delay and followed him.
Teaching and healing in Galilee
23Jesus went from place to place all over Galilee. He taught in their synagogues, announced the gospel of the kingdom, and healed every disease and every illness among the people. 24News about him spread through all Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was ill: those suffering from all kinds of diseases and pain, people controlled by demons, people who had seizures, and people who could not move. And he healed them. 25Great crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region beyond the Jordan.
