The birth of Jesus
18Now this is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they began to live together it became clear that she was expecting a child through the Holy Spirit. 19Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her in public, so he decided to divorce her privately. 20While he was turning this over in his mind, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” he said, “do not be afraid to take Mary into your home as your wife. The child she has conceived is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins.” 22All this happened so that the word the Lord had spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled: 23“See, the virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and people will call him Immanuel.” The name means “God is with us.”ef 24Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. He took his wife into his home. 25But he did not have sexual relations with her until she had given birth to a son, and he named him Jesus.gh
