The sealed scroll

¹In the right hand of the one seated on the throne I saw a scroll. It was written on the inside and on the back, and seven seals closed it. ²A strong angel was there too, and I heard him cry out with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the scroll’s seals and open it?” ³No one at all, in heaven, on the earth, or beneath it, was able to open the scroll or look into it. ⁴I began to weep bitterly, since no one had been found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. ⁵Then one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look: the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome, so he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

The Lamb takes the scroll

⁶Then, at the center of the throne and the four living creatures, among the elders, I saw a Lamb standing, looking as though he had been slaughtered. He had seven horns and seven eyes; these are the seven spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. ⁷He came and received the scroll out of the right hand of the one seated on the throne. ⁸As soon as he took the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders bowed low before the Lamb. Every one of them had a harp, and they held gold bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s holy people. ⁹They sing a new song: “Worthy are you to receive the scroll and to break open its seals, for you were slaughtered, and at the cost of your blood you bought for God those from every tribe and language and people and nation. ¹⁰You made them a kingdom, and priests serving our God, and they reign on the earth.”^ab

¹¹Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders. Their number was beyond counting: ten thousands of ten thousands, and thousands of thousands. ¹²With a loud voice they said, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered to receive power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing!” ¹³Then every created thing in heaven, on earth, under the earth and on the sea, all that they hold, I heard saying: “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” ¹⁴The four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.^c
