The thousand years

1Then I saw an angel come down from heaven with the key to the abyss and a heavy chain in his hand. 2He took hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and chained him up for a thousand years. 3Into the abyss he threw him, shutting it and setting a seal over him, so that he would deceive the nations no more until the thousand years were over. After that he must be let loose for a short time.

4I saw thrones, and people seated on them who were given the right to judge. I saw too the souls of those beheaded for holding to the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, those who had refused to worship the beast or its image and had not let its mark be put on forehead or hand. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5The other dead did not live again until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is anyone who has a share in the first resurrection! Over such people the second death has no power; they will serve as priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him a thousand years.

7Once the thousand years are completed, Satan will be freed from his prison 8and will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, and to muster them for war, countless as the sand of the sea. 9Up they came across the whole width of the earth and encircled the camp of God’s holy people and the beloved city. Then fire fell from heaven and burned them up. 10Then the devil, their deceiver, was cast into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are as well; and day and night, forever and ever, they will suffer torment.

The great white throne

11Next I saw a great white throne, and the one who sat on it; from his face earth and sky ran away, and no place could be found for them. 12I saw the dead, the great and the lowly, standing in front of the throne. Books were opened, and so was another book, the book of life, and the dead were judged on the basis of what the books recorded, according to their deeds. 13The sea handed over its dead, and Death and Hades handed over theirs, and they were judged, every one of them, by their works. 14Then Death and Hades themselves were cast into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15And whoever was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
