The seventh day
1So the heavens and the earth were completed, with everything in them. 2On the seventh day God brought to an end the work he had been doing, and on the seventh day he stopped all the work he had done.a 3God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, since on that day he rested from all his work, all that God had created and made.
The man and the woman in the garden of Eden
4This is the story of the heavens and the earth as they were created. When the LORD God made earth and heavens, 5no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, because the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no one to work the ground. 6Instead, water would well up from the earth and soak the whole surface of the ground.b 7Then the LORD God shaped the man out of dust from the ground. He breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. 8The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, and there he placed the man he had shaped. 9Out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasing to look at and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it split into four branches. 11The first is named Pishon. It winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12The gold of that land is good, and aromatic resin and onyx stone are found there as well.c 13The second river is named Gihon. It winds through the whole land of Cush. 14The third river is named Tigris. It runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15The LORD God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16The LORD God commanded the man, “You may eat as much as you like from any tree in the garden, 17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because on the day you eat from it, you will surely die.” 18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be on his own. I will make him a helper who matches him.” 19So the LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would name them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that became its name.d 20The man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the sky and every wild animal. But no helper who matched him was found for the man.e 21So the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.f 22Then the LORD God built a woman out of the rib he had taken from the man, and brought her to him. 23The man said, “At last, here is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24This is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.g 25Both of them, the man and his wife, were naked, yet they were not ashamed.
