Abram rescues Lot, and Melchizedek blesses him
1In the days when Amraphel was king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim, 2these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3All these kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim, where the Dead Sea is now. 4They had paid tribute to Kedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they revolted. 5In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer came with his allied kings and crushed the Rephaites in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-kiriathaim 6and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-paran on the edge of the desert. 7Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites living in Hazazon-tamar. 8Then the kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and took up battle positions in the Valley of Siddim 9against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar: four kings against five. 10The Valley of Siddim was riddled with tar pits. As the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah ran, some of their men fell into them, and the survivors escaped into the hills. 11The victors carried off everything from Sodom and Gomorrah, all their goods and food, and went on their way. 12Among the captives was Lot, Abram’s nephew, who lived in Sodom; they took him and all he had. 13Someone who escaped brought the news to Abram the Hebrew. Abram was camped by the great trees belonging to Mamre the Amorite, whose brothers were Eshcol and Aner; all three were bound by treaty to Abram. 14As soon as Abram learned that his kinsman was a prisoner, he mustered the 318 trained men of his household, all born in his camp, and chased the enemy as far as Dan. 15He split his men into groups and fell on the enemy by night. He routed them and pursued them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. 16He got back all the plunder, and he brought back Lot his kinsman with his goods, as well as the women and the rest of the captives. 17When Abram came back from his victory over Kedorlaomer and the kings with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh, which is the King’s Valley. 18Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. 19He blessed Abram and said, “May Abram be blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.a 20And blessed be God Most High, who has given your enemies into your power.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Let me have the people; you keep the goods.” 22Abram answered the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand in an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,b 23that I will not keep a single thing of yours, not a thread, not a sandal strap. You will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24I will take nothing except what my young men have already eaten. But Aner, Eshcol and Mamre, who went with me, must have their share.”
