Hagar and Ishmael
1Sarai, Abram’s wife, had still given him no children. But she owned an Egyptian servant named Hagar. 2Sarai said to Abram, “You see that the LORD has not let me bear children. Take my servant; it may be that through her I will have a family.” And Abram listened to Sarai. 3Ten years after Abram had settled in Canaan, his wife Sarai gave him Hagar, her Egyptian servant, as a wife. 4He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once she knew she was carrying a child, she began to look down on her mistress. 5Sarai said to Abram, “You are to blame for the wrong done to me! I gave my servant to you, and now that she is pregnant she holds me in contempt. The LORD be judge between you and me!” 6Abram answered Sarai, “She is your slave, and she is in your hands. Deal with her as you see fit.” Then Sarai treated her so harshly that she ran away. 7The angel of the LORD came upon her beside a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur. 8He asked her, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you headed?” She answered, “I am running away from Sarai, my mistress.” 9The angel of the LORD said to her, “Go back to your mistress and put yourself under her authority.” 10The angel of the LORD also said, “I will make your descendants so many that no one will be able to count them.” 11Then the angel of the LORD said, “You are with child, and you will have a son. Call him Ishmael, for the LORD has listened to your suffering. 12He will be like a wild donkey: he will raise his hand against everyone, and everyone will raise a hand against him, and he will live at odds with all his kin.”a 13So she gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me.” For she said, “Have I truly seen the One who watches over me?”b 14That is why the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named the son she had borne him Ishmael. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
