Habakkuk’s prayer

1A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, on shigionoth. 2LORD, I have heard of your fame, and I stand in awe. \q LORD, renew your work in our own time; \q in our own time make it known; \q in wrath, remember mercy. 3God came from Teman, \q the Holy One from Mount Paran. \q His splendor covered the heavens, \q and the earth was filled with his praise. Selah 4His brightness was like the sunlight; \q rays flashed from his hand, \q and there his power lay hidden. 5Disease went ahead of him, \q and plague followed at his heels. 6He stood, and the earth shook; he looked, and the nations trembled. \q The ancient mountains broke apart; \q the age-old hills sank down. \q His ways are eternal. 7I saw the tents of Cushan in distress; \q the tent curtains of Midian shook.

God rides out to save

8Was your anger burning against the rivers, LORD? \q Was your wrath against the streams, \q or your fury against the sea, \q as you rode your horses, \q your chariots of salvation? 9Your bow was drawn from its case; \q the arrows were charged by your word. \q You split the earth with rivers. Selah 10The mountains saw you and writhed; \q a torrent of water swept past; \q the deep roared aloud \q and lifted its hands high. 11Sun and moon stood still in the heavens \q at the light of your flying arrows, \q at the flash of your gleaming spear. 12In fury you strode across the earth; \q in anger you trampled the nations. 13You went out to save your people, \q to save your anointed one. \q You crushed the head of the house of the wicked, \q stripping it bare from the foundation up to the neck. Selah

Waiting quietly and rejoicing

14With his own arrows you pierced the head of his warriors \q when they stormed out to scatter me, \q gloating as if about to devour \q the helpless in their hiding place. 15You trampled the sea with your horses, \q churning the mighty waters. 16I heard, and my body trembled; my lips quivered at the sound. \q Decay entered my bones, and my legs shook beneath me. \q Yet I will wait quietly for the day of trouble \q to come on the people who invade us. 17Though the fig tree does not flower and the vines bear no grapes, \q though the olive harvest fails \q and the fields yield nothing to eat, \q though the sheep vanish from the pen \q and the stalls hold no cattle, 18yet I will rejoice in the LORD; \q I will find joy in God, my Savior. 19The Lord GOD is my strength; \q he makes my feet as sure as a deer’s \q and lets me walk on the heights. \q For the music director. With stringed instruments.
