The words of this covenant
This message came to Jeremiah from the LORD: 2“Listen to the words of this covenant, and speak them to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem. 3Say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of Israel, says this: Cursed is anyone who does not obey the words of this covenant,a 4which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them from the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace. I told them, “Listen to my voice and carry out these words, doing all that I command you; then you will be my people, and I will be your God,” 5so that I might keep the oath I swore to your ancestors, that I would give them a land flowing with milk and honey; and so it is today.’” I answered, “Amen, LORD.”
Then the LORD said to me, “Announce all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Listen to the words of this covenant and carry them out. 7For I warned your ancestors in the strongest terms when I brought them up from the land of Egypt, and I have warned them again and again until today: “Listen to my voice.”b 8But they did not listen or pay attention. Each of them walked in the stubbornness of their evil hearts. So I brought on them all that this covenant threatens, for I had commanded them to keep it, but they did not keep it.’”
Then the LORD said to me, “A conspiracy has come to light among the people of Judah and among those who live in Jerusalem. 10They have gone back to the sins of their earliest ancestors, who refused to listen to my words; they too have followed other gods and served them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have both broken my covenant, the one I made with their ancestors.
So the LORD says this: I am about to bring a disaster on them that they will not be able to escape. When they cry out to me, I will not listen to them. 12Then the towns of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods they burn offerings to, but those gods will never save them when their disaster comes. 13For you have as many gods as you have towns, Judah, and you have set up as many altars to that shameful thing as there are streets in Jerusalem, altars for burning offerings to Baal.
As for you, do not pray for this people. Do not lift up a cry or a prayer for them, because I will not listen when they call out to me because of their trouble.c
What right does my beloved have in my house, when she has carried out so many evil schemes? \q Can sacred meat take your disaster away from you, \q so that you could rejoice?d 16‘A green olive tree, beautiful with fine fruit’: \q that is what the LORD named you. \q But with the noise of a great storm he will set it on fire, \q and its branches will be broken. 17The LORD of Armies, who planted you, has decreed disaster against you because of the evil the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done to their own harm, provoking me to anger by burning offerings to Baal.”
The men of Anathoth seek Jeremiah’s life
The LORD let me know, and so I knew; \q then you showed me what they were doing. 19I was like a trusting lamb being led away to be slaughtered; \q I did not know it was against me that they were making their plans: \q “Let us destroy the tree, fruit and all; let us cut him off from the land of the living, \q so that his name is never remembered again.”e 20But LORD of Armies, you who judge with justice, \q who test the inner feelings and the mind, \q let me see you take vengeance on them, \q for I have laid my case before you.
So the LORD says this about the men of Anathoth, \q who are seeking your life and saying, \q “Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, \q if you do not want to die at our hands,”
the LORD of Armies says this: I am about to punish them. \q Their young men will die by the sword, \q and their sons and daughters will die by famine, 23and none of them will be left, \q for I will bring disaster on the men of Anathoth \q in the year of their punishment.
