Pashhur puts Jeremiah in the stocks

1Now Pashhur son of Immer, the priest, who was the chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks at the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the LORD. 3The next day, when Pashhur let Jeremiah out of the stocks, Jeremiah told him, “Pashhur is not the name the LORD gives you. His name for you is Terror on Every Side.

4For the LORD says this: ‘I am about to turn you into a terror to yourself and to everyone who loves you. Before your own eyes they will fall by the swords of their enemies. I will hand all Judah over to the king of Babylon. He will carry them away to Babylon as exiles and put them to the sword. 5I will hand over to their enemies all the wealth stored up in this city, all that its people have worked for, all its valuable things, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. They will loot them, seize them and haul them away to Babylon. 6As for you, Pashhur, you and everyone in your household will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and you will die and be buried there, together with all the friends to whom you have prophesied lies.’”

Like a fire in my bones

7You enticed me, LORD, and I was taken in; \q you were too strong for me, and you won. \q All day long people laugh at me; \q every one of them makes fun of me. 8Whenever I speak, I cry out; \q I shout, “Violence and ruin!” \q So the word of the LORD has brought me insult and scorn all day long. 9If I say, “I will not mention him or speak in his name anymore,” \q then it is like a fire burning in my heart, \q shut up inside my bones. \q I wear myself out holding it in, and I cannot. 10I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! \q Inform on him! Let us inform on him!” \q All my trusted friends \q watch for me to stumble: \q “Perhaps he can be enticed; then we will get the better of him \q and take our revenge on him.” 11But the LORD is with me like a terrifying warrior; \q so those who hunt me will stumble and will not win. \q They will be thoroughly shamed when they fail, \q with a lasting disgrace that will never be forgotten. 12LORD of Armies, you who test the righteous, \q who see the inner feelings and the mind, \q let me see you take vengeance on them, \q for I have laid my case before you.

13Sing to the LORD! \q Praise the LORD! \q For he has rescued the poor from the power of those who do evil.

Why was I born?

14A curse on the day I was born! \q May the day my mother gave birth to me never be blessed! 15A curse on the man who brought my father the news, \q “You have a son, a boy!” \q and made him so very glad. 16May that man be like the cities \q that the LORD overthrew, never relenting; \q may he hear a cry of distress in the morning \q and the alarm of battle at noon, 17because he did not kill me in the womb; \q then my mother would have been my grave, \q her womb pregnant for all time. 18Why did I ever come out of the womb \q to look on hardship and grief, \q and to have my days run out in shame?
