Fight for me, LORD

1Of David. LORD, oppose those who oppose me; do battle with those who battle against me. 2Seize the small shield and the large one, and stand up to help me. 3Draw the spear and battle-axe to face those who chase me; let me hear you say, “I am your salvation.” 4Let those who are hunting for my life be shamed and disgraced; let those who are plotting to hurt me be driven back in confusion. 5May they be like chaff the wind blows off, with the LORD’s angel driving them along. 6May their path turn dark and slick, with the LORD’s angel hunting them down. 7For no reason they set a hidden net in a pit for me; for no reason they dug a hole to trap me. 8Let disaster fall on them before they know it; let the net they hid catch them, and let them drop into it to their ruin. 9Then my whole being will be glad in the LORD and celebrate the salvation he brings. 10Every bone in my body will say, “LORD, is there anyone like you? You save the helpless from people stronger than they are, the helpless and the poor from those who rob them.” 11Violent witnesses stand up against me and question me about things I know nothing of. 12They pay me back harm for good; I am left desolate, like someone who has lost a child. 13But as for me, when they lay sick, I dressed in sackcloth; I humbled myself by fasting, and I prayed with my head bent low. 14I went about as if for a friend or a brother; I bent low, dressed in dark mourning clothes, like one grieving for a mother. 15But when I stumbled, they were glad and gathered together; attackers gathered against me without my knowing it; they ripped into me and would not be quiet. 16Like ungodly jesters who mock for a bite of food, they ground their teeth at me. 17Lord, how long will you stand and watch? Bring me back from the ruin they cause; save my one and only life from the lions. 18I will thank you when the great congregation gathers; I will praise you among crowds of people. 19Do not let my lying enemies gloat over me; do not let those who hate me for nothing wink at each other. 20For they do not talk of peace; they dream up lies against people living quietly in the land. 21They open their mouths wide at me and say, “Aha! Aha! We saw it with our own eyes!” 22You have seen it, LORD; do not keep silent. Lord, do not stay far away from me. 23Wake up! Rouse yourself to do me justice; my God and my Lord, take up my case! 24LORD my God, give judgment for me as your righteousness requires; let them not rejoice over me. 25Do not let them say to themselves, “Aha! We got our wish!” Do not let them say, “We have gulped him down.” 26Let all who are glad at my trouble be shamed and confused together; let those who lift themselves up over me be dressed in shame and disgrace. 27Let those who want to see me proved right shout with joy and be glad; let them say again and again, “The LORD is great! He is pleased when his servant has peace.” 28Then all day long I will talk about how righteous you are and sing your praise.
