From forsaken to praise among the nations
1For the music director. On Ayyeleth-hashshahar. A psalm of David. 2My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I roar out my words, and still rescue is far away. 3My God, all day I call, and you do not answer; all night too, and I cannot be still. 4Yet you are holy; Israel’s praises are the throne where you sit. 5Our ancestors relied on you; they relied on you, and you brought them out safe. 6They cried out to you and escaped; they relied on you and were never disgraced. 7But I am a worm and no longer a man, a byword of scorn among people, despised by the crowd. 8Everyone who sees me laughs at me; they curl their lips and shake their heads, 9“Leave it to the LORD! Let him get him out of it; let him save him, since he is so delighted with him!” 10Yet it was you who drew me out at birth and kept me safe as I nursed at my mother’s breast. 11From birth I was thrown into your arms; since my mother carried me, you have been my God. 12Do not keep your distance from me; distress is at hand, and I have no helper. 13A herd of bulls has closed in around me; the powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in. 14They gape at me with open jaws, like a lion that roars and rips its prey. 15My life drains away like spilled water; every bone in me is wrenched apart. My heart is like wax, melting deep inside me. 16My strength is as dry as a shard of broken pottery; my tongue is stuck fast to my jaw, and you bring me down to the dust of death. 17Dogs are all around me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; like a lion they go for my hands and my feet.a 18I can count every one of my bones, while they look on and stare at me. 19They share out my clothes among themselves and throw lots for what I wear. 20But you, LORD, do not stand far off! My strength, hurry to help me! 21Save my life from the sword; save the only life I have from the dog’s paw. 22Save me from the lion’s mouth! Even as the wild oxen lower their horns at me, you have answered me!b 23I will make your name known to my brothers and sisters; with the whole assembly gathered, I will praise you. 24Praise him, all who fear the LORD! Let all of Jacob’s family give him honor; let all of Israel’s people stand in awe of him! 25For he has not looked down on the suffering of the one in misery or turned from it in disgust; he did not turn his face away, but heard him when he called for help. 26It is you who give me my praise in the great assembly; I will pay what I vowed where those who fear him can see. 27The poor will eat and have their fill; those who seek him will praise the LORD. May new life fill your hearts forever! 28People at the farthest ends of the earth will remember and come back to the LORD; every clan of every nation will bow low before you. 29For the kingdom is the LORD’s, and he governs the nations. 30The prosperous of the earth will eat and bow in worship; those on their way down to the dust, who have no power to keep their own lives, will bend the knee before him.c 31A new generation of descendants will serve him, and they will be told about the Lord in the age that follows. 32They will come and tell of his justice to a people not yet born: he has done this!
