Woe to those who plan evil

1Woe to those who plot wickedness and lie on their beds working out evil! \q When morning dawns they carry it out, \q because they have the power to do it. 2They covet fields and seize them, \q houses, and take them away. \q They crush a man and his household, \q a man and his inheritance.

The LORD plans disaster against this clan

3Therefore the LORD says this: \q See, I am planning disaster against this clan, \q a yoke you cannot free your necks from; you will no longer walk proudly, \q for it will be a time of disaster. 4On that day people will sing a taunt song about you and wail in bitter lament, “We are completely ruined! \q He hands over my people’s share to others. \q How he takes it away from me! \q He parcels out our fields to a traitor.” 5So you will have no one \q to stretch out a measuring line by lot \q in the assembly of the LORD. 6“Stop preaching,” they preach. \q “No one should preach about such things. \q Disgrace will not catch up with us.” 7Should this be said, house of Jacob? “Has the LORD run out of patience? \q Are these the things he does?” \q Do my words not do good \q to the one whose life is upright? 8But lately my people have risen up like an enemy. \q You strip the cloak off the tunic \q of those who pass by without a care, \q people who want nothing to do with war. 9You drive the women of my people \q out of the homes they love; \q from their young children \q you take away my glory forever. 10Get up and go! \q This is not the place of rest, \q because uncleanness brings destruction, a painful destruction. 11If someone came along, full of wind and lies, saying, \q “I will preach to you \q about wine and beer,” \q he would be just the preacher for this people! 12I will gather all of you, Jacob; I will surely bring together the remnant of Israel. \q I will put them together like sheep in a pen, \q like a flock in its pasture; \q the place will be loud with people. 13The one who breaks through will go up ahead of them; \q they will break out, go through the gate, \q and leave by it. \q Their king will go on before them, \q the LORD at their head.
