Eliphaz: no one will answer you
1Call out, then; is there anyone who will answer you? \q To which of the holy ones will you turn? 2For resentment kills the fool, \q and envy slays the simple. 3I myself have seen a fool putting down roots, \q but suddenly I declared his home cursed.a 4His children are far from safety; \q they are crushed in the court at the gate, \q with no one to rescue them. 5The hungry eat up his harvest, \q taking it even from among the thorns, \q and a trap lies open for their wealth.b 6Hardship does not spring up from the dust, \q and trouble does not sprout from the soil. 7No, human beings are born to trouble, \q as sparks fly upward.c 8But as for me, I would turn to God \q and lay my case before God. 9He does great things beyond understanding, \q wonders that cannot be counted. 10He gives rain to the earth \q and sends water on the fields. 11He sets the lowly on high, \q and those who mourn are lifted to safety. 12He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, \q so that their hands achieve nothing. 13He catches the wise in their own cunning, \q and the schemes of the devious are swept away. 14In the daytime they run into darkness, \q and at noon they grope as if it were night. 15But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouths \q and from the grip of the powerful. 16So the poor have hope, \q and injustice shuts its mouth. 17How blessed is the one whom God corrects! \q So do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. 18For he wounds, but he also binds up; \q he strikes, but his hands heal. 19He will rescue you from six troubles; \q in seven, no harm will touch you. 20In famine he will redeem you from death, \q and in war from the power of the sword. 21You will be sheltered from the lash of the tongue, \q and you will not fear destruction when it comes. 22You will laugh at destruction and hunger, \q and you need not fear the wild animals of the earth. 23For you will be in covenant with the stones of the field, \q and the wild animals will be at peace with you. 24You will know that your home is secure; \q you will look over your property and find nothing missing. 25You will know that your offspring will be many, \q your descendants like the grass of the earth. 26You will come to your grave in full vigor, \q like sheaves gathered in at harvest time. 27We have looked into all this, and it is true. \q So hear it and know it for your own good.
