The proverbs of Solomon
1The proverbs of Solomon. \q A wise son is his father’s joy, \q but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother. 2Wealth gained by wickedness does no good in the end, \q but righteousness rescues from death. 3The LORD will not leave the righteous to starve, \q but he pushes away what the wicked crave. 4A slack hand leads to poverty, \q but hard-working hands bring wealth. 5A son who gathers the crops in summer is wise; \q a son who sleeps through harvest brings disgrace. 6The righteous wear blessings like a crown, \q but violence lies hidden behind the words of the wicked. 7The righteous are remembered with blessing, \q but the name of the wicked decays. 8The wise in heart accept instruction, \q but a fool who keeps talking will come to ruin. 9Whoever lives honestly walks without fear, \q but the one who takes crooked roads will be exposed. 10Someone who winks with the eye causes trouble, \q and a fool who keeps talking will come to ruin.a 11What the righteous say is a spring of life, \q but behind the words of the wicked lies violence. 12Hatred starts fights, \q but love draws a veil over every wrong. 13Wisdom is found on the lips of a person of understanding, \q but the rod is for the back of one with no sense. 14The wise keep knowledge in store, \q but a fool’s mouth invites ruin. 15A rich person’s wealth is a fortified city; \q poverty is what ruins the poor. 16What the righteous earn leads to life; \q what the wicked gain leads to sin. 17Whoever holds on to discipline is on the road to life, \q but whoever rejects correction leads others astray. 18Hiding hatred makes for lying lips, \q and spreading slander makes a fool. 19Where there are many words, wrongdoing is never far away, \q but whoever holds back their words is wise. 20The tongue of the righteous is pure silver; \q the heart of the wicked is worth very little. 21The words of the righteous nourish many, \q but fools die for lack of sense. 22It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, \q and hard work adds nothing to it.b 23Doing wrong is a game to a fool, \q but a person of understanding delights in wisdom. 24What the wicked dread is what will happen to them, \q but what the righteous long for will be given to them. 25When the whirlwind has passed through, the wicked are gone, \q but the righteous have a foundation that lasts forever. 26Like vinegar on the teeth or smoke in the eyes \q is a lazy messenger to those who send him. 27The fear of the LORD lengthens life, \q but the years of the wicked are cut off early. 28What the righteous hope for ends in joy, \q but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing. 29For those with integrity the way of the LORD is a refuge, \q but for evildoers it is ruin. 30The righteous will never be moved, \q but the wicked will not remain in the land. 31Wisdom grows from the mouth of the righteous like fruit, \q but a twisted tongue will be cut out. 32The righteous know how to say what is pleasing, \q but the wicked speak only what is twisted.
