Hear this word, cows of Bashan

1Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on the hill of Samaria, \q you who oppress the poor \q and crush the needy, \q who say to their husbands, “Bring us something to drink!” 2The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness: \q The time is surely coming for you \q when you will be dragged away with hooks, \q the last of you with fishhooks. 3You will go out through the breaches in the wall, each one straight ahead, \q and you will be thrown out toward Harmon, declares the LORD. 4Go to Bethel and rebel! \q Go to Gilgal and rebel even more! \q Bring your sacrifices every morning, \q your tithes every three days! 5Burn a thank offering of leavened bread, \q and announce your freewill offerings, make them known! \q For this is what you love to do, people of Israel, \q declares the Lord GOD. 6I also gave you clean teeth in all your cities \q and lack of bread in all your towns. \q Yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD. 7I also held back the rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. \q I would send rain on one town \q but no rain on another. \q One field would get rain, \q and the field that got none would dry up. 8People from two or three towns staggered to another town for water but could not get enough to drink. \q Yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD. 9I struck you with blight and mildew; \q the cutting locust devoured your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and olive groves. \q Yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

10I sent a plague among you as I did on Egypt; \q I killed your young men with the sword, \q and your horses were captured; \q I made the stench of your camps fill your nostrils. \q Yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD. 11I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, \q and you became like a burning stick pulled out of the fire. \q Yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

Prepare to meet your God

12So this is what I will do to you, Israel; \q and because I am going to do this to you, \q prepare to meet your God, Israel! 13For he is the one who forms the mountains and creates the wind, who reveals his thoughts to humankind, \q who turns the dawn into darkness \q and treads on the heights of the earth: \q The LORD God of Armies is his name.
