Against the mountains of Israel
1The word of the LORD came to me: 2Son of man, turn to face the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them. 3Say: Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD! The Lord GOD says this to the mountains and the hills, to the ravines and the valleys: I myself am bringing a sword against you, and I will wipe out your high places. 4Your altars will be laid waste and your incense altars smashed, and I will make your slain fall in front of your idols.a 5I will lay the corpses of the Israelites in front of their idols and scatter your bones around your altars. 6Wherever you live, the towns will be laid waste and the high places made desolate, so that your altars will be ruined and held guilty, your idols smashed and gone, your incense altars cut down, and what you have made wiped out.b 7The slain will fall among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.c 8Yet I will spare some of you. Some will escape the sword and live among the nations when you are scattered through the countries. 9Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they have been taken captive. They will remember how I was broken by their hearts, which prostituted themselves and turned away from me, and by their eyes, which prostituted themselves by going after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done, for all their detestable practices.d 10Then they will know that I am the LORD, and that I did not threaten in vain to bring this disaster on them.
Clap your hands and cry, Alas
11The Lord GOD says this: Clap your hands, stamp your foot and cry, “Alas!” over all the evil and detestable practices of the house of Israel, for they will fall by sword, famine and plague. 12Those far away will die of plague, those nearby will fall by the sword, and whoever is left and has been spared will die of famine. So I will spend my wrath on them. 13Then you will know that I am the LORD, as their slain are lying among their idols, around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak, the places where they offered pleasing aromas to all their idols. 14I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land a desolate waste from the wilderness to Diblah, wherever they live. Then they will know that I am the LORD.e
