Pray for us
1Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us: pray that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified everywhere, as it was among you, 2and that we may be rescued from perverse and wicked people, for faith is not found in everyone. 3But the Lord can be trusted: he will make you strong and guard you from the evil one.a 4Because of the Lord, we are confident about you: you are doing what we tell you, and you will go on doing it. 5May the Lord guide your hearts into the love of God and the endurance of Christ.b
Anyone who will not work
6Brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ we command you: keep your distance from any brother or sister who lives an undisciplined life, contrary to the tradition they received from us. 7You know yourselves that you should imitate us. We did not live idly among you, 8and we never ate anyone’s bread as a gift; we labored and toiled, working night and day, so as not to be a burden to any of you. 9It was not that we had no right to support, but we wanted to give you an example to follow. 10For even while we were with you, we gave you this instruction: “Anyone who will not work should not eat.” 11We hear that some among you are living undisciplined lives: they are not busy working, they are busy with everyone else’s business. 12We command such people, and we urge them in the Lord Jesus Christ, to go about their work quietly and to eat bread they have earned themselves. 13As for you, brothers and sisters, do not lose heart in doing what is right.
14If anyone will not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person and have nothing to do with them, so that they will be ashamed. 15But do not treat that person as an enemy; correct them as a brother or sister.
Peace, and Paul’s own greeting
16Now may the Lord of peace himself grant you peace continually and in every way. The Lord be with you all.
17This greeting is in my own handwriting, Paul’s. It is the sign of genuineness in every letter; this is how I write. 18May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
