The sign of the shaved hair
1“As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor. Shave your head and your beard with it. Then take scales for weighing and divide the hair into portions. 2When the days of the siege are over, burn a third of the hair in the fire inside the city. Take another third and strike it with the sword all around the city. Scatter the last third to the wind, and I will unsheathe a sword to pursue them. 3Take a few strands from these and tuck them into the fold of your robe. 4Take some of these again, throw them into the fire and burn them up. From it fire will spread to all the house of Israel.
This is Jerusalem
5The Lord GOD says this: This is Jerusalem. I have set her at the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6But she has rebelled against my rulings more wickedly than the nations, and against my statutes more than the countries around her. Her people have rejected my rulings and have not lived by my statutes.
7Therefore the Lord GOD says this: You have been more unruly than the nations around you. You have not lived by my statutes or carried out my rulings. You have not even lived up to the standards of the nations around you.a
8therefore the Lord GOD says this: I myself am against you, and I will carry out judgments among you in the sight of the nations. 9Because of all your detestable practices, I will do among you what I have never done before, and the like of which I will never do again.
10So parents among you will eat their children, and children will eat their parents. I will carry out judgments on you and scatter all your survivors to every wind.
11Therefore, as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, since you have made my sanctuary unclean with all your vile idols and all your detestable practices, I myself will cut you down. I will not look on you with pity or spare you.b 12A third of your people will die of plague or perish from famine within your walls; a third will fall by the sword around you; and a third I will scatter to every wind and pursue with a drawn sword. 13Then my anger will be spent; I will satisfy my wrath on them and be appeased. Then they will know that I, the LORD, have spoken in my jealousy, when I spend my wrath on them. 14I will turn you into a ruin and an object of scorn among the nations around you, for every passerby to see. 15You will be a disgrace and an object of scorn, a warning and a horror for the nations around you, as I carry out judgments on you in anger and wrath and with furious rebukes. I, the LORD, have spoken. 16When I shoot at you the deadly arrows of famine, arrows meant for destruction that I send to destroy you, I will bring more and more famine on you and break your staff of bread. 17I will send famine and wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children. Plague and bloodshed will pass through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
