Out of Egypt I called my son
1When Israel was a boy, I loved him, \q and out of Egypt I called my son.a 2The more they called to them, \q the more they went away from them. \q They sacrificed to the Baals \q and burned offerings to carved idols.b 3Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, \q holding them by the arms, \q but they did not know that I was the one who healed them.c 4I led them with human cords, with ropes of love. \q To them I was like someone who lifts the yoke off their jaws, \q and I bent down to them and fed them.d 5He will not go back to the land of Egypt; \q Assyria will be his king instead, \q because they refused to return to me.e 6A sword will sweep through their cities; \q it will break the bars of their gates and consume them, \q because of their own schemes.f 7My people are set on turning away from me. \q Though they are called to the One on high, \q not one of them rises up.g 8How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I surrender you, Israel? \q How can I treat you like Admah? \q How can I make you like Zeboiim? \q Within me my heart turns over; \q all my compassion is stirred. 9I will not act on my burning anger; \q I will not turn to destroy Ephraim again. \q For I am God and not a human, \q the Holy One among you, \q and I will not come in fury.h 10They will follow the LORD, who will roar like a lion. \q When he roars, \q children will come trembling from the west. 11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, \q like doves from the land of Assyria, \q and I will settle them in their homes, declares the LORD.
ማብራሪያዎች
- a1out of Egypt I called my son: the exodus, quoted in Matthew 2:15. የታሰቡ ሌሎች አማራጮች፦ a prediction about the Messiah only.
- b2They called to them ... away from them: messengers called Israel, and Israel walked away from them. ሌሎች የእጅ ጽሑፎች፦ As I called them, so they went away from me (the reading of the Greek translation) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- c3taking them by his arms: the Hebrew as written, the parent holding the child up by the arms. ሌሎች የእጅ ጽሑፎች፦ I took them up in my arms (the reading of the ancient translations) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- d4like those who lift a yoke off their jaws: a farmer easing the yoke so that the animal can eat. ሌሎች የእጅ ጽሑፎች፦ like those who lift an infant to their cheeks (a reading that changes only the vowels of the word for “yoke”) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- e5He will not return to Egypt: Egypt will be no refuge; Assyria will rule him. ወይም፦ He will return to Egypt (reading the first word as “to him” and joining it to verse 4, as 8:13 and 9:3 say); a question: Will he not return to the land of Egypt? (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- f6his bars: the bars that bolt the city gates. ወይም፦ his empty talkers (the same letters form a word for boasters or false prophets, Isaiah 44:25; Jeremiah 50:36) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- g7they are called upward, to the One on high, but not one of them rises: the people will not answer the call. ወይም፦ they call to the Most High, but he will not raise them up at all; they call him to a false god (reading the word for “on high” as a name) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
- h9in wrath. ወይም፦ into a city (the same letters spell the common word for “city”) (እርግጠኛ ያልሆነ).
