The great fish and Jonah’s prayer

1But the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. 2Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the fish. 3He said: \q “When I was in trouble I cried out to the LORD, and he gave me an answer; \q from deep in Sheol I called for help, and you heard my voice. 4You threw me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, \q and the current swirled around me; \q all your breaking waves and rollers have gone over my head. 5I said, ‘I have been driven away from your sight; \q still, I will look again toward your holy temple.’ 6The waters closed over me up to my throat; \q the deep was all around me; \q seaweed was wrapped around my head. 7I went down to the roots of the mountains; \q the earth’s bars closed behind me forever. \q But you brought my life up from the pit, LORD my God. 8As my life was ebbing away, \q I remembered the LORD, \q and my prayer came to you, \q into your holy temple. 9Those who devote themselves to useless idols \q abandon their loyal love. 10But I will sacrifice to you with a song of thanksgiving; \q what I have vowed I will make good. \q It is the LORD who saves.”

11Then the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land.
