1 Timóteo 2

Paul asks that prayers be offered for everyone, including rulers, because God wants all to be saved and there is one mediator between God and humanity. He then gives instructions about how men are to pray and how women are to conduct themselves.

Prayer for all, and the one mediator

1First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanks be offered for everyone: 2for kings and for all who hold high office, so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives, fully devoted to God and worthy of respect. 3This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4who wants everyone to be saved and to come to know the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all. This was the testimony given at the right time. 7For this purpose I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth; I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Instructions for men and women

8So I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, free from anger and quarreling. 9In the same way, I want women to dress in a fitting way, with modesty and good sense, and not to make braided hair, gold, pearls or costly clothes their adornment, 10but good works, as is right for women who claim to honor God. 11A woman should learn quietly and with full submission. 12I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet. 13For Adam was formed first, and then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and fell into sin. 15Yet she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love and holiness, with self-control.
