1I am now coming to you for the third time. “Every charge is to be settled on what two or three witnesses say.” 2When I was with you on my second visit, I gave a warning to those who had sinned before and to all the rest, and now, while I am away, I give it again: when I come back I will spare no one, 3since you are asking for evidence that Christ really speaks in me. He does not deal with you in weakness; he is powerful among you. 4He was indeed crucified in weakness, but he lives by the power of God. We too are weak in him, but you will find us living with him by the power of God.

Test yourselves

5Look closely at yourselves: are you holding to the faith? Put yourselves to the test. Or do you not see in your own lives that Jesus Christ is in you? That is, unless you fail the test. 6And I hope you will see that we are not the ones who fail the test. 7Our prayer to God is that you will do no wrong at all. Our aim is not to look as though we have passed the test; we want you to do what is good, even if we then look like people who have failed it. 8We have no power to act against the truth, only to act for it. 9We are glad to be weak if it means that you are strong. Indeed, we pray for this: that you will be mended and made whole. 10That is why I am writing this while I am still away: so that when I come I need not deal with you sharply, using the authority the Lord gave me, which is for building up and not for tearing down.

Final appeal, greetings and blessing

11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Let yourselves be mended, be encouraged, be of one mind, and keep the peace among you. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All God’s holy people send you greetings. 13May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with every one of you.
