Teach us to count our days

1A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our home through every generation. 2Before the mountains came to birth, before you labored to bring to birth the earth and all the world, from the endless past to the endless future you are God. 3You make mortals go back to dust; you say, “Return, children of Adam.” 4For in your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday, once it has gone by, or like one watch of the night. 5You wash them away like a flood. They are a passing sleep. When morning comes they are like grass that springs up again. 6In the morning it blooms and grows fresh; by evening it droops and dries out. 7For we are worn away by your anger and struck with terror by your rage. 8You have laid our wrongs out before you; what we hid is lit up by the light of your face. 9All our days slip away under your wrath; our years end like a sigh. 10Our lifetime lasts seventy years, or eighty for the strong; yet even its best is toil and sorrow, for it hurries past, and we take flight. 11Who knows the force of your anger? Your fury matches the reverence you deserve. 12Teach us, then, to reckon our days rightly, so that our hearts may grow wise. 13Turn back to us, LORD! How long must we wait? Show pity to your servants. 14Fill us with your loyal love at daybreak, and we will shout for joy and rejoice as long as we live. 15Match the days you brought us low with days of gladness, and the years of hardship we have known with years of joy. 16Let your servants see your deeds, and let their children see your splendor. 17May the Lord our God show us his kindness. Give lasting worth to the work of our hands; yes, give the work of our hands lasting worth.
