Rescue from enemies who prowl at night

1For the music director. To the tune “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam, from the time when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. 2Rescue me from my enemies, my God; \q lift me high out of reach of those who rise against me. 3Rescue me from those who do evil; \q save me from men who shed blood. 4Look, they lie in ambush for my life; \q powerful men band together against me, \q though I have not rebelled or sinned, LORD. 5Through no fault of mine they rush to take up their places. \q Wake up, come to meet me, and look! 6LORD God of Armies, God of Israel, \q rise up and call all the nations to account; \q have no pity on any who plot evil in their treachery. Selah 7At nightfall they return, \q snarling like dogs as they roam the city. 8Look how their mouths gush with insults; \q their lips are swords, \q for they say, “Who will hear?” 9But you, LORD, laugh at them; \q you hold all the nations in derision. 10Against his strength I will keep watch for you, \q for God is my high fortress. 11My God of loyal love will go before me; \q God will let me look down on my foes. 12Do not kill them outright, in case my people forget; \q by your power send them staggering and bring them low, \q Lord, our shield. 13Every word from their lips is sin in their mouths; \q let them be snared by their own pride, \q for the cursing and lying they speak. 14Destroy them in your anger, destroy them until they are gone, \q so that people will know that God rules over Jacob \q to the ends of the earth. Selah 15At nightfall they return, \q snarling like dogs as they roam the city. 16They roam about for food, \q and if they are not filled, they stay out all night. 17But I will sing of your might, \q and at daybreak I will shout for joy over your loyal love, \q for you have been my high fortress, \q a place to flee to when I was in trouble. 18My Strength, I will make music to you, \q for God is my high fortress, my God of loyal love.
