The life that was revealed
1What was there from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our own eyes, what we looked at closely and touched with our hands—this is what we are speaking about: the word of life. 2That life was revealed. We have seen it, and we testify to it, and we announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. 3We announce to you as well what we have seen and heard, so that you too may have fellowship with us. The fellowship we share is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.a 4We put these things in writing so that our joy may be complete.b
Walking in the light
5Now this is the message we heard from him and are declaring to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness, not the least. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him while we go on walking in the darkness, we are lying and are not living by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, just as he is in the light, we share fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, goes on cleansing us from every sin.c 8If we claim that we are free from sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous: he will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every kind of wrongdoing. 10If we claim that we have never sinned, we are calling him a liar, and his word is not in us.
