Lawsuits between believers
1When one of you has a dispute with another, how can you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous instead of before God’s holy people? 2Or do you not know that God’s holy people will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you not fit to settle the most trivial of cases? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more, then, the affairs of everyday life! 4So if you have cases about everyday matters, why do you seat as judges people who count for nothing in the church?a 5I say this to shame you. Is there really no one among you with wisdom enough to settle a case between brothers and sisters, 6so that instead believers go to law against one another, and before unbelievers at that? 7Simply by having lawsuits against one another you are already defeated, whatever the verdict. Why not accept being wronged instead? Why not accept being cheated instead? 8Instead, you yourselves do the wronging and the cheating, and to your own brothers and sisters!
Those who will not inherit the kingdom
9Or do you not know that people who do wrong will not receive God’s kingdom as their inheritance? Make no mistake: the sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who take the passive part in sex with men, men who go to bed with males, 10thieves, the greedy, drunkards, abusive people, and swindlers: none of these will receive God’s kingdom as their inheritance.bc 11Some of you once lived in these ways. But you have been washed clean; you have been made holy; you have been put right with God, in the name of the Lord Jesus and through the Spirit of our God.
Your body belongs to the Lord
12“Everything is permitted for me.” Yes, but not everything is for the good.d “Everything is permitted for me.” Yes, but I will not let anything become my master.e 13“Food exists for the stomach and the stomach for food, and in the end God will do away with them both.”f The body, however, does not exist for sexual immorality; it exists for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14God raised the Lord, and by his power he will raise us as well. 15Do you not know that your bodies are parts of Christ’s body? Am I then to take parts of Christ’s body and make them parts of a prostitute’s body? Absolutely not! 16Or do you not know that a man who attaches himself to a prostitute forms one body with her? For Scripture says, “The two will be united into one flesh.” 17But anyone who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. 18Get away from sexual immorality! Whatever other sin someone commits stays outside the body, but the one who is sexually immoral sins against their very own body.g 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives, the Spirit who is in you and whom God has given you? You do not belong to yourselves. 20You were bought, and a price was paid for you. So bring glory to God in your body.h
