I will do today exactly what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: ‘Your son Solomon will be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.’”
Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so too.
As the LORD has been with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon, and may he make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!”
And the king also said this: ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has today given me one to sit on my throne, and has let me see it with my own eyes.’”
Keep what the LORD your God has entrusted to you: walk in his ways and keep his statutes, his commandments, his rulings, and his decrees, as they are written in the law of Moses. Then you will act wisely and succeed in all you do and wherever you turn,
so that the LORD may keep the promise he made about me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, walking faithfully before me with all their heart and all their soul, there will always be a man of your line on the throne of Israel.’
There is also Shimei son of Gera with you, the Benjaminite from Bahurim. He hurled bitter curses at me on the day I set out for Mahanaim. But he came down to the Jordan to meet me, and I gave him my oath by the LORD: ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’
He said, “You know that the kingship was mine. All Israel looked to me to be king. But the kingship changed hands and went to my brother, because it came to him from the LORD.

When the news reached Joab, since he had sided with Adonijah, though he had not sided with Absalom, Joab fled to the tent of the LORD and grasped the horns of the altar.
King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was there beside the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada with the order, “Go and strike him down.”
Benaiah went to the tent of the LORD and said to him, “The king says this: ‘Come out!’” But he said, “No, I will die here.” Benaiah took word back to the king: “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.”
The LORD will bring his blood back on his own head, because without my father David’s knowledge he attacked two men more righteous and better than himself and killed them with the sword: Abner son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.
So their blood will come back on Joab’s head and on the heads of his descendants forever. But for David and his descendants, his house and his throne, there will be peace from the LORD forever.”
Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not have you swear by the LORD, and did I not warn you, ‘The day you leave and go anywhere at all, you can be sure that you will die’? And you said to me, ‘What you say is fair; I will obey.’
Why then have you failed to keep your oath to the LORD and the command I gave you?”
The king also said to Shimei, “You know in your heart all the wrong you did to my father David. Now the LORD will bring your wrongdoing back on your own head.
But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will stand firm before the LORD forever.”

So I intend to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, just as the LORD told my father David: ‘Your son, whom I will put on your throne in your place, will build the house for my name.’
When Hiram heard Solomon’s words, he was delighted and said, “Blessed be the LORD today, who has given David a wise son to rule over this great people!”
The LORD gave wisdom to Solomon, as he had promised him. Hiram and Solomon were at peace, and the two of them made a treaty with each other.
In the 480th year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year that Solomon reigned over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD.
The temple that King Solomon built for the LORD was about 90 feet long, about 30 feet wide and about 45 feet high.
Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon:
He prepared the inner sanctuary inside the temple to place the ark of the covenant of the LORD there.
In the fourth year, in the month of Ziv, the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
The great courtyard had walls all around of three courses of cut stone and one course of cedar beams, like the inner courtyard of the house of the LORD and the porch of the house.
Hiram also made the basins, the shovels and the sprinkling bowls. So Hiram finished all the work that he did for King Solomon on the house of the LORD:
and the pots, the shovels and the sprinkling bowls. All these things that Hiram made for King Solomon for the house of the LORD were of polished bronze.
Solomon also made all the furnishings of the house of the LORD: the altar of gold; the table of gold for the bread of the Presence;

Then Solomon called together the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the leaders of the ancestral families of the Israelites, to come to King Solomon in Jerusalem. They were to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD up from the city of David, that is, Zion.
They brought up the ark of the LORD, the tent of meeting, and all the holy utensils that were in the tent. The priests and the Levites carried them up.
The priests then carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD into its place in the inner sanctuary of the house, the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubim.
The ark held nothing but the two stone tablets Moses had put in it at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of the land of Egypt.
As the priests were coming out of the holy place, the house of the LORD was filled by the cloud.
The priests were unable to stand and do their service because of the cloud, since the house of the LORD was full of the glory of the LORD.
Then Solomon said, “The LORD has said that he would dwell in thick darkness.
He said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who with his own mouth made a promise to my father David and with his own hand has now fulfilled it. For he said,
My father David had it in his heart to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
But the LORD said to my father David, ‘You wanted to build a house for my name, and you did well to have this in your heart.
Now the LORD has kept the promise he made. I have taken the place of my father David and sit on Israel’s throne, as the LORD promised, and I have built this house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.
There I have prepared a place for the ark, which holds the covenant of the LORD that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.”
Then Solomon took his place before the altar of the LORD, in front of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven.
He said, “The LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in the heavens above or on the earth beneath. You keep your covenant and show faithful love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart,
Now, the LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant, my father David, the promise you made to him: ‘You will never lack a man of your line sitting before me on the throne of Israel, as long as your descendants watch how they live and walk before me as you have walked before me.’
Yet listen to the prayer of your servant and to his plea for mercy, the LORD my God. Hear the cry and the prayer your servant prays before you this day,
When your people go out to fight against their enemy, wherever you send them, and they pray to the LORD facing the city you chose and the house I built for your name,
When Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and plea to the LORD, he got up from where he had been kneeling before the altar of the LORD, his hands spread out toward heaven.
“Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel, just as he promised. Of all the good promises he made through his servant Moses, not one word has failed.
May the LORD our God be with us just as he was with our ancestors. May he never leave us or abandon us,
May these words I have prayed before the LORD stay near the LORD our God day and night, so that he upholds the cause of his servant and of his people Israel, day by day as each need arises,
so that every people on earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

That same day the king made holy the central part of the courtyard before the house of the LORD. He offered there the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat parts of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that stood before the LORD was too small to hold them: the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.
So at that time Solomon held the festival, and all Israel with him, a great assembly from Lebo-hamath to the Wadi of Egypt, before the LORD our God, for seven days and then seven more days, fourteen days in all.
On the eighth day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and went home, joyful and glad at heart for all the good the LORD had done for David his servant and for Israel his people.
After Solomon had completed the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and everything else he had set his heart on making,
the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon.
The LORD said to him, “I have heard your prayer and the plea for mercy you made to me. I have set apart as holy this house you have built, and I have put my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.
And this house, high as it stands, will leave everyone who passes by it appalled. They will hiss and ask, ‘Why has the LORD dealt like this with this land and this house?’
And people will answer, ‘Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt, and they embraced other gods and worshiped and served them. That is why the LORD has brought all this disaster on them.’”
At the end of the twenty years it took Solomon to build the two houses, the LORD’s house and the royal palace,
This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the house of the LORD, his own palace, the Millo, Jerusalem’s wall, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer.
Three times a year Solomon would present burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar that he himself had built for the LORD, and with them he burned incense before the LORD. And so he finished the house.
The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame, a fame bound up with the name of the LORD, and she came to test him with difficult questions.

Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the LORD loves Israel forever, he has made you king, to do justice and righteousness.”
The king used the almug wood to make supports for the house of the LORD and the royal palace, as well as lyres and harps for the singers. No such almug wood has come in again or been seen to this day.
from the nations the LORD had warned the Israelites about: “Do not intermarry with them, and do not let them intermarry with you, for they will surely turn your hearts to follow their gods.” Yet Solomon held fast to these women in love.
When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart to follow other gods, and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of his father David had been.
So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and did not follow the LORD wholeheartedly, as his father David had done.
The LORD became angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had twice appeared to him
and had commanded him about this very matter, that he must not follow other gods. But Solomon did not keep what the LORD had commanded.
So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is what you have done, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I commanded you, I will certainly tear the kingdom from you and give it to your servant.
Then the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon: Hadad the Edomite, who was of the royal family of Edom.
Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says this: ‘I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes,
So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events came from the LORD, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
‘The LORD says this: Do not go up to fight against your relatives, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this thing has come from me.’” So they heeded the word of the LORD and went back home, as the LORD had said.
If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, their hearts will turn back to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and go back to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
Just then a man of God came from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.
By the word of the LORD he cried out against the altar, “Altar, altar! The LORD says this: ‘A son will be born to the house of David, and his name will be Josiah. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who burn their incense here, and human bones will be burned on you.’”
That same day he gave a sign: “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: The altar will be split apart, and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
The altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, in keeping with the sign that the man of God, by the word of the LORD, had given.
Then the king said to the man of God, “Please plead with the LORD your God and pray for me, so that my hand may be restored to me.” So the man of God pleaded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before.
For this is the command I was given by the word of the LORD: ‘Eat no bread and drink no water, and do not go back by the way you came.’”
For a word came to me by the word of the LORD: ‘Eat no bread and drink no water there, and do not go back by the way you came.’”
The old prophet said to him, “I am a prophet as well, just as you are, and by the word of the LORD an angel told me, ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he can eat bread and drink water.’” But he was lying to him.
As they sat at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet, the very one who had brought him back.
He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “The LORD says this: ‘You have defied the word of the LORD. Because you did not keep the command that the LORD your God gave you,
When the prophet who had brought him back from the road heard it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied the word of the LORD. The LORD has handed him over to the lion, and it has mauled him and killed him, in keeping with the word of the LORD that he spoke to him.”
What he cried out by the word of the LORD will certainly come true, both against the altar in Bethel and against every shrine on the high places in the towns of Samaria.”
But the LORD had said to Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife is coming to ask you for a word about her son, because he is sick. You are to tell her such and such. When she arrives, she will be pretending to be someone else.”
Go and tell Jeroboam, ‘The LORD, the God of Israel, says this: I raised you up from among the people and made you ruler over my people Israel.
Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and anyone who dies in the open country, the birds of the sky will eat. For the LORD has spoken.’
All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only one belonging to Jeroboam who will be laid in a grave, because in him something good toward the LORD, the God of Israel, has been found in the house of Jeroboam.
The LORD will raise up a king of his own over Israel, and that king will cut off Jeroboam’s house. This is the day; indeed, it has already begun.
The LORD will strike Israel until it sways like a reed in the water. He will pull Israel up by the roots from this good land he gave their ancestors and scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, because they have made their Asherah poles and provoked the LORD to anger.
They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, just as the LORD had said through his servant Ahijah the prophet.
Rehoboam son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen from among all the tribes of Israel as the place for his name. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite.
Judah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. By the sins they committed they stirred up his jealousy more than all their ancestors had done.
There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land. The people did all the detestable things of the nations that the LORD had driven out ahead of the Israelites.
He carried off the treasures of the house of the LORD and those of the king’s palace. He took everything, even all the gold shields Solomon had made.
Whenever the king went into the house of the LORD, the guards carried the shields, and afterward they brought them back to the guardroom.
He walked in all the sins his father had committed before him, and his heart was not wholly given to the LORD his God, as the heart of his ancestor David had been.
Yet for David’s sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son to rule after him and keeping Jerusalem secure,
because David had done what was right in the sight of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything he commanded him as long as he lived, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
Asa did what was right in the sight of the LORD, as his ancestor David had done.
The high places, however, were not taken away. Even so, Asa’s heart was wholly given to the LORD all his life.
He brought into the house of the LORD the gifts his father had dedicated and the gifts he himself had dedicated: silver, gold and utensils.
Then Asa took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and the treasuries of the king’s palace, and handed it over to his officials. King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon, son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who ruled in Damascus, with this message:
He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in his sin, by which he had led Israel to sin.
As soon as he became king, he struck down the whole house of Jeroboam. He did not leave Jeroboam a single living soul, but destroyed them all, as the LORD had said through his servant Ahijah of Shiloh,
because of Jeroboam’s sins, the sins he had committed and by which he had led Israel to sin, and by which he had provoked the LORD the God of Israel to anger.
He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin, by which he had led Israel to sin.
Then the word of the LORD came to Jehu son of Hanani, a word against Baasha:
The word of the LORD had also come through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani against Baasha and his house. It came because of all the evil Baasha did in the sight of the LORD, provoking him to anger by the work of his hands, so that he became like the house of Jeroboam. It came also because he had struck that house down.
So Zimri destroyed the whole house of Baasha, as the word of the LORD had said against Baasha through Jehu the prophet,
because of all the sins of Baasha and the sins of his son Elah, the sins they committed and by which they led Israel to sin, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
because of the sins he had committed, doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD, walking in the way of Jeroboam and in the sin he committed, by which he led Israel to sin.
Omri did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. He did more evil than all who were before him.
He walked in all the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sin, by which he led Israel to sin, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their worthless idols.
Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him.
Ahab also made the Asherah pole. He did more than all the kings of Israel before him to provoke the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger.
In Ahab’s days Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. At the price of Abiram his firstborn he laid its foundation, and at the price of Segub his youngest he set its gates in place, as the word of the LORD had said through Joshua son of Nun.
Elijah the Tishbite, one of the settlers in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the years ahead unless I give the word.”
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
So Elijah did as the LORD had told him. He went and stayed by the Wadi Cherith, east of the Jordan.
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
She said, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. I am gathering a couple of sticks so I can go home and prepare it for my son and me. We will eat it, and then we will die.”
For the LORD, the God of Israel, says this: ‘The jar of flour will not be emptied, and the jug of oil will not give out, until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’”
The jar of flour was not emptied, and the jug of oil did not give out, just as the LORD had said through Elijah.
Then he cried out to the LORD, “The LORD my God, have you brought disaster even on this widow who has given me a place to stay, by causing her son to die?”
Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, “The LORD my God, please let this boy’s life come back into him!”
The LORD listened to Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life came back into him, and he lived.
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know you are a man of God, and that what the LORD says through you is true.”
After many days, in the third year, the LORD spoke to Elijah: “Go and appear before Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”
Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Obadiah was a man who deeply revered the LORD.
When Jezebel was killing off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah had taken a hundred of them and hidden them in caves, fifty in each, and had kept them supplied with food and water.)
As surely as the LORD your God lives, my master has sent people to look for you in every nation and kingdom. Whenever a nation said, ‘He is not here,’ he made its people swear that they could not find you.
As soon as I leave you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you off to some place I do not know. Then when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I, your servant, have revered the LORD since I was young.
Has my lord not been told what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD’s prophets, fifty in each of two caves, and kept them supplied with food and water.
Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Armies lives, whom I serve, I will present myself to Ahab today.”
Elijah answered, “I have not brought trouble on Israel. You have, you and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the LORD’s commandments and followed the Baals.
Elijah stepped up before all the people and said, “How long will you go on hobbling between two choices? If the LORD is God, follow him. If it is Baal, follow Baal.” But the people said nothing in reply.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only one left of the LORD’s prophets, but Baal has 450 prophets.
Then you call on your god by name, and I will call on the name of the LORD. Whichever god answers with fire, he is God.” All the people answered, “That is well said.”
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” When they had all come near, he repaired the LORD’s altar, which had been torn down.
Elijah took twelve stones, one for each tribe descended from the sons of Jacob, the man to whom the word of the LORD had come: “Your name will be Israel.”
He used the stones to build an altar in the name of the LORD, and around the altar he dug a trench large enough to hold about 13 quarts of seed.
At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet stepped forward and said, “The LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today make it known that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that it is at your word that I have done all this.
Answer me, the LORD, answer me, so that these people may know that you, the LORD, are God and are turning their hearts back again.”
Then fire from the LORD fell. It burned up the burnt offering, the wood, the stones and the soil, and licked up the water in the trench.
When all the people saw it, they fell face down and said, “The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”
The hand of the LORD came on Elijah. He tucked his robe into his belt and ran in front of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
But he himself went on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom tree and sat down under it, and he prayed that he might die. “It is enough,” he said. “Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”
The angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”
There he came to the cave and spent the night in it. Then the word of the LORD came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
He answered, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God of Armies, because the Israelites have abandoned your covenant. They have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I alone am left, and now they are seeking to take my life.”
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD.” And there, the LORD was passing by. A mighty, fierce wind was splitting the mountains and smashing the rocks to pieces ahead of the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake; the LORD was not in the earthquake.
Then came fire after the earthquake, but the LORD was not in the fire. And when the fire had passed, a faint sound, thin as silence.
He answered, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God of Armies, because the Israelites have abandoned your covenant. They have torn down your altars and put your prophets to the sword. I alone am left, and now they are seeking to take my life.”
The LORD said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Aram.
Just then a prophet came up to Ahab king of Israel and said, “The LORD says this: ‘Do you see this whole huge army? I am handing it over to you today, and then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
Ahab asked, “By whom?” He answered, “The LORD says this: ‘By the young men of the provincial officials.’” Ahab asked, “Who will start the battle?” He answered, “You will.”
Then the man of God came to the king of Israel and said, “The LORD says this: ‘Because the Arameans have said that the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will hand this whole huge army over to you, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
By the word of the LORD one of the company of prophets said to his companion, “Please strike me.” But the man would not strike him.
So he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.” And when he had left him, a lion found him and killed him.
The prophet said to him, “The LORD says this: ‘Because you have let go the man I had devoted to destruction, your life will go for his life, and your people for his people.’”
But Naboth said to Ahab, “The LORD forbid that I hand over to you the inheritance of my ancestors!”
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:
Say to him, ‘The LORD says this: Have you committed murder and also taken possession?’ Then say to him, ‘The LORD says this: In the place where the dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, the dogs will lick up your blood too, yes, yours.’”
Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, my enemy?” “I have found you,” Elijah answered, “because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the LORD.
And concerning Jezebel the LORD has also spoken: ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.’
There was truly no one like Ahab, who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD, urged on by his wife Jezebel.
He acted in the most detestable way by going after idols, just as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD drove out before the Israelites.
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite:
But Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “First, please seek the word of the LORD.”
But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no other prophet of the LORD here whom we can ask?”
The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man through whom we could inquire of the LORD: Micaiah son of Imlah. But I hate him, for his prophecies about me are never good, only bad.” Jehoshaphat said, “Let the king not speak like that.”
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah had made himself iron horns, and he said, “The LORD says this: ‘With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.’”
All the prophets were prophesying the same thing: “Go up to Ramoth-gilead and be victorious. The LORD will give it into the king’s hand.”
But Micaiah said, “As surely as the LORD lives, whatever the LORD says to me is what I will speak.”
When he came to the king, the king asked him, “Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or shall we hold back?” He answered, “Go up and be victorious. The LORD will give it into the king’s hand.”
