  1. Mwanzo 2:4

This is the story of the heavens and the earth as they were created. When the LORD God made earth and heavens,

  2. Mwanzo 2:5

no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, because the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no one to work the ground.

  3. Mwanzo 2:7

Then the LORD God shaped the man out of dust from the ground. He breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

  4. Mwanzo 2:8

The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, and there he placed the man he had shaped.

  5. Mwanzo 2:9

Out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasing to look at and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  6. Mwanzo 2:15

The LORD God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

  7. Mwanzo 2:16

The LORD God commanded the man, “You may eat as much as you like from any tree in the garden,

  8. Mwanzo 2:18

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be on his own. I will make him a helper who matches him.”

  9. Mwanzo 2:19

So the LORD God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would name them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that became its name.

  10. Mwanzo 2:21

So the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.

  11. Mwanzo 2:22

Then the LORD God built a woman out of the rib he had taken from the man, and brought her to him.

  12. Mwanzo 3:1

Now the serpent was more cunning than any wild animal the LORD God had made. It said to the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any tree in the garden?”

  13. Mwanzo 3:8

Then they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the breezy time of the day, and the man and his wife hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

  14. Mwanzo 3:9

But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

  15. Mwanzo 3:13

Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”

  16. Mwanzo 3:14

So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.

  17. Mwanzo 3:21

And the LORD God made garments of skin for the man and his wife, and clothed them.

  18. Mwanzo 3:22

Then the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take from the tree of life as well, and eat, and live forever.”

  19. Mwanzo 3:23

So the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to work the ground he had been taken from.

  20. Mwanzo 4:1

The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought a man into being.”

  21. Mwanzo 4:3

In the course of time Cain brought some of the produce of the ground as an offering to the LORD.

  22. Mwanzo 4:4

And Abel also brought an offering: some of the firstborn of his flock, with their fat portions. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,

  23. Mwanzo 4:6

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?

  24. Mwanzo 4:9

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know,” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

  25. Mwanzo 4:13

Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear.

  26. Mwanzo 4:15

But the LORD said to him, “Because of this, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.

  27. Mwanzo 4:16

So Cain went out from the LORD’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

  28. Mwanzo 4:26

Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.

  29. Mwanzo 5:29

He named him Noah, saying, “He will bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands, caused by the ground that the LORD has cursed.”

  30. Mwanzo 6:3

Then the LORD said, “My spirit will not stay in human beings forever, for they are mortal. Their days will be 120 years.”

  31. Mwanzo 6:5

The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil all the time.

  32. Mwanzo 6:6

So the LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

  33. Mwanzo 6:7

So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human beings I have created, and with them the animals, the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the sky, for I regret that I made them.”

  34. Mwanzo 6:8

But Noah found favor with the LORD.

  35. Mwanzo 7:1

Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me among the people of this generation.

  36. Mwanzo 7:5

Noah did everything the LORD commanded him.

  37. Mwanzo 7:16

Those that went in were male and female of every creature, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.

  38. Mwanzo 8:20

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and he took some of every clean animal and every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

  39. Mwanzo 8:21

When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, “Never again will I curse the ground because of human beings, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. Never again will I strike down every living creature, as I have done.

  40. Mwanzo 9:26

He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be his servant.

  41. Mwanzo 10:9

He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why people say, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD.”

  42. Mwanzo 11:5

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building.

  43. Mwanzo 11:6

And the LORD said, “They are one people with one language, and this is only the start of what they will do. From now on nothing they set out to do will be out of their reach.

  44. Mwanzo 11:8

So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.

  45. Mwanzo 11:9

That is why it was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

  46. Mwanzo 12:1

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your relatives and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.

  47. Mwanzo 12:4

Abram set out as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five when he left Haran.

  48. Mwanzo 12:7

Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

  49. Mwanzo 12:8

From there he moved on into the hills east of Bethel and set up his tent between Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. He built an altar to the LORD there and called on the name of the LORD.

  50. Mwanzo 12:17

But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife Sarai.

  51. Mwanzo 13:4

where he had built the altar before. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.

  52. Mwanzo 13:10

Lot looked out over the Jordan plain and saw water everywhere, all the way to Zoar, as in the garden of the LORD or the land of Egypt. (That was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

  53. Mwanzo 13:13

The people of Sodom, however, were evil and grievous sinners against the LORD.

  54. Mwanzo 13:14

After Lot had gone, the LORD said to Abram, “Raise your eyes and look out from where you stand, to the north and south, east and west.

  55. Mwanzo 13:18

So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.

  56. Mwanzo 14:22

Abram answered the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand in an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

  57. Mwanzo 15:1

Some time later the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, and your reward will be very great.”

  58. Mwanzo 15:4

Then the word of the LORD came to him: “No, he will not inherit from you. Your heir will be your own son, born of your own body.”

  59. Mwanzo 15:6

Abram put his trust in the LORD, and the LORD counted it to his credit as righteousness.

  60. Mwanzo 15:7

He also told him, “I am the LORD. I brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to be your own.”

  61. Mwanzo 15:18

That day the LORD made a covenant with Abram: “I am giving this land to your descendants, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates,

  62. Mwanzo 16:2

Sarai said to Abram, “You see that the LORD has not let me bear children. Take my servant; it may be that through her I will have a family.” And Abram listened to Sarai.

  63. Mwanzo 16:5

Sarai said to Abram, “You are to blame for the wrong done to me! I gave my servant to you, and now that she is pregnant she holds me in contempt. The LORD be judge between you and me!”

  64. Mwanzo 16:7

The angel of the LORD came upon her beside a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur.

  65. Mwanzo 16:9

The angel of the LORD said to her, “Go back to your mistress and put yourself under her authority.”

  66. Mwanzo 16:10

The angel of the LORD also said, “I will make your descendants so many that no one will be able to count them.”

  67. Mwanzo 16:11

Then the angel of the LORD said, “You are with child, and you will have a son. Call him Ishmael, for the LORD has listened to your suffering.

  68. Mwanzo 16:13

So she gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me.” For she said, “Have I truly seen the One who watches over me?”

  69. Mwanzo 17:1

When Abram was ninety-nine, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Live your life before me and be wholehearted,

  70. Mwanzo 18:1

The LORD appeared to Abraham by the great trees of Mamre. It was the hottest part of the day, and Abraham was sitting in the doorway of his tent.

  71. Mwanzo 18:13

Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Shall I really give birth, old as I am?’

  72. Mwanzo 18:14

Is anything too wonderful for the LORD? At the appointed time, when the season comes round, I will come back to you, and Sarah will have a son.”

  73. Mwanzo 18:17

Then the LORD said, “Should I keep from Abraham what I am about to do?

  74. Mwanzo 18:19

I have singled him out so that he will charge his children and his family after him to walk in the way of the LORD, doing what is right and just. That is how the LORD will fulfil for Abraham what he has spoken about him.”

  75. Mwanzo 18:20

So the LORD said, “The cry for help that rises against Sodom and Gomorrah is loud, and their sin weighs very heavy.

  76. Mwanzo 18:22

The men left there and set off toward Sodom, while Abraham stayed standing in the presence of the LORD.

  77. Mwanzo 18:26

The LORD answered, “If I find fifty innocent people within Sodom, I will spare all of it because of them.”

  78. Mwanzo 18:33

The LORD went on his way when he had finished talking with Abraham, and Abraham went back to his own place.

  79. Mwanzo 19:13

because we are going to destroy it. The outcry against its people has grown so great before the LORD that he has sent us to destroy the city.”

  80. Mwanzo 19:14

So Lot went out and told the men who were engaged to his daughters, “Hurry, leave this place! The LORD is going to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was not serious.

  81. Mwanzo 19:16

When he still hesitated, the men took hold of his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters, because the LORD had pity on him. They led him out and left him outside the city.

  82. Mwanzo 19:24

Then the LORD sent burning sulfur pouring down on Sodom and Gomorrah. It came from the LORD, out of the sky.

  83. Mwanzo 19:27

Early the next morning Abraham went back to the place where he had stood in the presence of the LORD.

  84. Mwanzo 20:18

For on account of Abraham’s wife Sarah, the LORD had closed every womb in Abimelech’s household.

  85. Mwanzo 21:1

The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would, and the LORD carried out for Sarah what he had spoken.

  86. Mwanzo 21:33

Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beersheba. There he worshiped, calling on the name of the LORD, God Everlasting.

  87. Mwanzo 22:11

But from heaven the angel of the LORD called to him, “Abraham, Abraham!” And Abraham said, “I am here.”

  88. Mwanzo 22:14

Abraham named that place “The LORD Will See to It.” That is why people still say today, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be seen to.”

  89. Mwanzo 22:15

Then the angel of the LORD called out once more to Abraham from heaven,

  90. Mwanzo 22:16

saying, “This is the word of the LORD: By myself I swear that since you have done this, and have not kept back your son, your only son,

  91. Mwanzo 24:1

Abraham had grown old; he was far on in years, and the LORD had given him blessing in every part of his life.

  92. Mwanzo 24:3

so that I can bind you by an oath in the name of the LORD, God of heaven and God of earth. You must not get a wife for my son from the Canaanite women of the land where I am living.

  93. Mwanzo 24:7

The LORD, the God of heaven, took me from my father’s family and the land of my birth. He spoke to me and swore to me, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ He will send his angel ahead of you, and you will find a wife there for my son.

  94. Mwanzo 24:12

Then he prayed: “the LORD, God of my master Abraham, let things go well for me today. Show your faithful love to my master Abraham.

  95. Mwanzo 24:21

The man stood gazing at her without a word, waiting to see whether the LORD had blessed his journey with success or not.

  96. Mwanzo 24:26

The man knelt low and worshiped the LORD.

  97. Mwanzo 24:27

“May the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, be praised!” he said. “He has not stopped being kind and true to my master. The LORD has guided me on my way straight to the home of my master’s relatives.”

  98. Mwanzo 24:31

“Come in, blessed of the LORD!” he said. “Why stay out here? The house is ready for you, and I have made room for the camels.”

  99. Mwanzo 24:35

The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become a rich and powerful man. The LORD has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, servants both male and female, camels and donkeys.

  100. Mwanzo 24:40

He answered, ‘The LORD, in whose presence I have lived my life, will send his angel with you and give your journey success. You will get a wife for my son from my clan, from my father’s family.

  101. Mwanzo 24:42

Today, when I reached the spring, I prayed: ‘the LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you mean to prosper the errand I have come on,

  102. Mwanzo 24:44

and she answers, “Drink, and I will fetch water for your camels too.” May she be the woman the LORD has marked out for my master’s son.’

  103. Mwanzo 24:48

Then I knelt and worshiped the LORD. I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, for guiding me along the true road, to take my master’s kinswoman, his brother’s granddaughter, as a wife for his son.

  104. Mwanzo 24:50

Laban and Bethuel replied, “This has come from the LORD. It is not for us to say anything for it or against it.

  105. Mwanzo 24:51

Rebekah is here in front of you. Take her with you and go; she shall be your master’s son’s wife, as the LORD has declared.”

  106. Mwanzo 24:52

At their answer, Abraham’s servant bowed low to the ground before the LORD.

  107. Mwanzo 24:56

“Do not keep me waiting,” he said, “since the LORD has made my journey succeed. Let me leave and go back to my master.”

  108. Mwanzo 25:21

Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was unable to have children. The LORD granted his request, and Rebekah conceived.

  109. Mwanzo 25:22

The children inside her crushed against each other, and she said, “If it is like this, what is happening to me?” So she went to seek an answer from the LORD.

  110. Mwanzo 25:23

The LORD told her, “Two nations are inside you; two peoples will come from your body and go separate ways. One will be mightier than the other, and the elder will be servant to the younger.”

  111. Mwanzo 26:2

There the LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in whatever land I name to you.

  112. Mwanzo 26:12

Isaac sowed grain in that land, and that year it gave him a hundred times as much as he sowed. The LORD blessed him.

  113. Mwanzo 26:22

He moved on from there and dug yet another well, and this time no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, “Open Spaces”, saying, “Now at last the LORD has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

  114. Mwanzo 26:24

That night the LORD appeared to Isaac. “I am your father Abraham’s God,” he said. “You have nothing to fear, because I am with you. For the sake of Abraham my servant I will bless you and make your descendants many.”

  115. Mwanzo 26:25

Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. He set up his tent there, and his servants started digging a well.

  116. Mwanzo 26:28

They replied, “It is plain to us that the LORD has been with you. So we thought, ‘Let the two sides, we and you, be bound by an oath.’ We want to make a covenant with you,

  117. Mwanzo 26:29

that you will not harm us, since we did not touch you; we did you nothing but good and sent you off in peace. You are the one whom the LORD has blessed now.”

  118. Mwanzo 27:7

‘Bring me some game and make me a tasty meal. After I have eaten I will bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’

  119. Mwanzo 27:20

“How did you find it so fast, my son?” Isaac asked. “The LORD your God put it in my path,” he answered.

  120. Mwanzo 27:27

So he came close and kissed him, and when Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him: “Ah, my son smells like open country that the LORD has blessed!

  121. Mwanzo 28:13

There above it stood the LORD, and he said, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and of Isaac. To you and to your descendants I will give the ground you are lying on.

  122. Mwanzo 28:16

When Jacob woke from sleep, he said, “The LORD is truly here in this place, and I had no idea!”

  123. Mwanzo 28:21

and I come back safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God,

  124. Mwanzo 29:31

When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he let her conceive, while Rachel remained childless.

  125. Mwanzo 29:32

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, saying, “The LORD has seen how I suffer. Surely now my husband will love me.”

  126. Mwanzo 29:33

She conceived again and had another son. “The LORD has heard that I am unloved,” she said, “and so he has given me this son as well.” So she named him Simeon.

  127. Mwanzo 29:35

She conceived yet again and gave birth to a son. “Now I will give thanks to the LORD,” she said, and so she named him Judah. Then for a time she had no more children.

  128. Mwanzo 30:24

She called him Joseph, for she said, “May the LORD add one more son to me.”

  129. Mwanzo 30:27

But Laban said to him, “If you are well disposed toward me, stay. I have learned by omens that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”

  130. Mwanzo 30:30

Before I came you had only a little, and it has multiplied many times over; the LORD has blessed you with every step I took. But when am I to provide for my own family?”

  131. Mwanzo 31:3

The LORD said to Jacob, “Return to your fathers’ land and to your own people. I will be with you.”

  132. Mwanzo 31:49

and also Mizpah, for he said, “Let the LORD be on watch between us when we are out of sight of each other.

  133. Mwanzo 32:10

And Jacob prayed: “God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, LORD, it was you who said to me, ‘Return to your land and your family, and I will make things go well for you.’

  134. Mwanzo 38:7

But Judah’s firstborn, Er, was evil in the LORD’s eyes, and the LORD brought his life to an end.

  135. Mwanzo 38:10

Onan’s deed was evil in the LORD’s eyes, and Onan too died by the LORD’s hand.

  136. Mwanzo 39:2

The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man while he served in the house of the Egyptian, his master.

  137. Mwanzo 39:3

His master noticed that the LORD was with him, and that whatever Joseph undertook, the LORD made it turn out well.

  138. Mwanzo 39:5

As soon as Joseph had charge of the house and of all the Egyptian owned, the LORD blessed that household on Joseph’s account. Whatever the man had, at home or in the fields, the LORD’s blessing rested on it.

  139. Mwanzo 39:21

But the LORD was with Joseph. He treated him with loyal kindness and won him the favor of the prison warden.

  140. Mwanzo 39:23

The warden never looked into anything entrusted to Joseph, for the LORD was with him, and whatever Joseph did, the LORD made it succeed.

  141. Mwanzo 49:18

For your salvation I wait in hope, LORD.
