  1. Yona 1:1

The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:

  2. Yona 1:3

But Jonah got up to run away to Tarshish, out of the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and there he found a ship bound for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into the ship to sail with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

  3. Yona 1:4

But the LORD hurled a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship was about to break apart.

  4. Yona 1:9

He answered them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

  5. Yona 1:10

Then the men were seized with great fear, and they said to him, “What is this that you have done?” For the men knew that he was running away from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

  6. Yona 1:14

Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us perish for taking this man’s life! Do not hold us guilty of innocent blood. For you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”

  7. Yona 1:16

Then the men were filled with great fear of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.

  8. Yona 2:1

But the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.

  9. Yona 2:2

Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the fish.

  10. Yona 2:3

He said: “When I was in trouble I cried out to the LORD, and he gave me an answer; from deep in Sheol I called for help, and you heard my voice.

  11. Yona 2:7

I went down to the roots of the mountains; the earth’s bars closed behind me forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, LORD my God.

  12. Yona 2:8

As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple.

  13. Yona 2:10

But I will sacrifice to you with a song of thanksgiving; what I have vowed I will make good. It is the LORD who saves.”

  14. Yona 2:11

Then the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land.

  15. Yona 3:1

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:

  16. Yona 3:3

So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the LORD had told him. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk across.

  17. Yona 4:2

He prayed to the LORD, “Please, LORD, did I not say this while I was still in my own country? That is why I hurried to run away to Tarshish. For I knew that you are a God of grace and tender compassion, slow to grow angry, rich in faithful love, and one who relents from sending disaster.

  18. Yona 4:3

So now, LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better for me than life.”

  19. Yona 4:4

But the LORD said, “Are you right to be angry?”

  20. Yona 4:6

The LORD God appointed a leafy plant, and it grew up over Jonah to give shade over his head and to save him from his misery. Jonah was overjoyed about the plant.

  21. Yona 4:10

Then the LORD said, “You took pity on the plant, though you did not work for it or make it grow. It sprang up in a night and died in a night.
