  1. Yoshua 1:1

After the death of Moses, the servant of the LORD, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. The LORD said,

  2. Yoshua 1:9

Have I not given you this command? Be strong and courageous. Do not tremble with fear or lose heart, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

  3. Yoshua 1:11

“Go through the camp and give the people this order: ‘Get your food ready for the journey, because three days from now you will cross this Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you as your own.’”

  4. Yoshua 1:13

“Remember the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: ‘The LORD your God is giving you rest, and he will give you this land.’

  5. Yoshua 1:15

until the LORD gives your fellow Israelites rest as he has given you, and they too take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them. After that you may go back to the land that is yours and possess it, the land Moses the servant of the LORD gave you east of the Jordan, toward the sunrise.”

  6. Yoshua 1:17

We obeyed Moses in everything, and in the same way we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you the way he was with Moses.

  7. Yoshua 2:9

and told them, “I know the LORD has given this land to you. Terror of you has fallen on us, and everyone who lives in the land is melting in fear before you.

  8. Yoshua 2:10

We have heard how the LORD made the water of the Red Sea dry up before you as you left Egypt. And we have heard how you dealt with the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og: you devoted them to destruction.

  9. Yoshua 2:11

When we heard it, our hearts melted, and no one had any courage left because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.

  10. Yoshua 2:12

So now, swear to me by the LORD: since I have shown you faithful love, you too will show faithful love to my father’s family. Give me a sign I can trust

  11. Yoshua 2:14

The men answered her, “We stake our lives on yours, even to death, so long as you do not tell anyone about our mission. When the LORD gives us the land, we will treat you with faithful love and keep our word.”

  12. Yoshua 2:24

“The LORD has surely handed the whole land over to us,” they told Joshua. “Everyone who lives there is melting in fear because of us.”

  13. Yoshua 3:3

They gave the people this order: “As soon as you see the Levitical priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, move out from where you are and follow it.

  14. Yoshua 3:5

Joshua told the people, “Set yourselves apart as holy, because tomorrow the LORD is going to work wonders among you.”

  15. Yoshua 3:7

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to raise you up in the sight of all Israel, so that they will know I will be with you as I was with Moses.

  16. Yoshua 3:9

Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come over here and listen to the words of the LORD your God.”

  17. Yoshua 3:13

The priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, will set the soles of their feet in the Jordan’s waters, and as soon as they do, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off. The water flowing down from upstream will stand up in a single heap.”

  18. Yoshua 3:17

The priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD took a firm stand on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan. Meanwhile all Israel went across on dry ground, until the entire nation had completed the crossing.

  19. Yoshua 4:1

When the entire nation had finished its crossing of the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua,

  20. Yoshua 4:5

Joshua said to them, “Go ahead of the ark of the LORD your God, out to the middle of the Jordan. Every one of you is to lift a stone onto his shoulder, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites,

  21. Yoshua 4:7

then tell them, ‘In front of the ark of the covenant of the LORD the waters of the Jordan were cut off. As it passed into the Jordan, the Jordan’s waters were cut off.’ These stones will be a memorial for the Israelites forever.”

  22. Yoshua 4:8

The Israelites did as Joshua commanded. They lifted twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, one for each of the tribes of the Israelites, as the LORD had told Joshua. They took them across to the camping place and laid them down there.

  23. Yoshua 4:10

The priests who carried the ark kept standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything was done that the LORD had commanded Joshua to tell the people, just as Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people crossed over in haste.

  24. Yoshua 4:11

When all the people had finished crossing, the ark of the LORD and the priests crossed over in front of the people.

  25. Yoshua 4:13

About 40,000 men equipped for war crossed over before the LORD, ready for battle, to the plains of Jericho.

  26. Yoshua 4:14

That day the LORD raised Joshua up in the sight of all Israel, and they held him in awe all his life, just as they had held Moses in awe.

  27. Yoshua 4:15

    The LORD said to Joshua,

  28. Yoshua 4:18

As the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stepped up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of their feet came out onto dry ground, the Jordan’s waters went back to their place and flowed over all its banks as they had before.

  29. Yoshua 4:23

For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan’s waters ahead of you until you had crossed, just as the LORD your God had done to the Red Sea, drying it up ahead of us until we had crossed,

  30. Yoshua 4:24

so that all the peoples of the earth may know how mighty the hand of the LORD is, and so that you may fear the LORD your God for all time.”

  31. Yoshua 5:1

All the kings of the Amorites west of the Jordan and all the kings of the Canaanites along the sea heard how the LORD had made the waters of the Jordan dry up ahead of the Israelites until they had crossed. When they heard it, their hearts melted, and no spirit was left in them to face the Israelites.

  32. Yoshua 5:2

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make knives of flint and once more circumcise the sons of Israel, a second time.”

  33. Yoshua 5:6

For forty years the Israelites traveled in the wilderness, until that whole nation, the men of war who had come out of Egypt, had perished, because they had not listened to the voice of the LORD. The LORD swore to them that they would not see the land he had promised their fathers on oath to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

  34. Yoshua 5:9

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.” So that place is called Gilgal to this day.

  35. Yoshua 5:14

“Neither,” he answered. “I am the commander of the army of the LORD, and now I have come.” Then Joshua threw himself down with his face to the ground and bowed low. He said to him, “What does my lord wish to say to his servant?”

  36. Yoshua 5:15

The commander of the army of the LORD said to Joshua, “Take the sandals off your feet. The place you are standing on is holy.” And Joshua did so.

  37. Yoshua 6:2

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Look, I have handed Jericho over to you, along with its king and its strong warriors.

  38. Yoshua 6:6

So Joshua son of Nun summoned the priests and said to them, “Lift up the ark of the covenant. Seven priests are to go ahead of the ark of the LORD, carrying seven rams’ horns.”

  39. Yoshua 6:7

And he told the people, “Go forward and march around the city, with the armed men going on ahead of the ark of the LORD.”

  40. Yoshua 6:8

As soon as Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns before the LORD went forward blowing the horns, with the ark of the covenant of the LORD coming after them.

  41. Yoshua 6:11

So he had the ark of the LORD taken around the city, circling it once. Then they came back to the camp and spent the night there.

  42. Yoshua 6:12

Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD.

  43. Yoshua 6:13

The seven priests carrying the seven rams’ horns went on in front of the ark of the LORD, blowing the horns as they walked. The armed men went ahead of them, and the rear guard came behind the ark of the LORD, with the horns sounding without a break.

  44. Yoshua 6:16

The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the horns, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! The LORD has handed the city over to you.

  45. Yoshua 6:17

The city and everything in it are to be devoted to the LORD for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute is to be spared, she and everyone with her in her house, because she hid the messengers we sent.

  46. Yoshua 6:19

All the silver and gold and everything made of bronze and iron is holy to the LORD. It must go into the LORD’s treasury.”

  47. Yoshua 6:24

Then they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. But they put the silver and gold and the bronze and iron goods into the treasury of the LORD’s house.

  48. Yoshua 6:26

At that time Joshua put the people under this oath: “Cursed before the LORD be the man who sets out to rebuild this city, Jericho! At the price of his firstborn he will lay its foundation; at the price of his youngest he will set its gates in place.”

  49. Yoshua 6:27

So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread through the whole land.

  50. Yoshua 7:1

But the Israelites broke faith over the devoted things. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took a share of the devoted things, and the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.

  51. Yoshua 7:6

Joshua tore his clothes and fell face down on the ground before the ark of the LORD, and he stayed there until evening, he and the elders of Israel. They threw dust on their heads.

  52. Yoshua 7:10

The LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying face down like this?

  53. Yoshua 7:13

Get up and consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the LORD, the God of Israel, says this: “There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand up to your enemies until you remove the devoted things from among you.”

  54. Yoshua 7:14

In the morning you are to come forward tribe by tribe. The tribe that the LORD picks out is to come forward clan by clan. The clan that the LORD picks out is to come forward household by household, and the household that the LORD picks out is to come forward man by man.

  55. Yoshua 7:15

The one who is picked out with the devoted things is to be burned, he and everything he has, because he has broken the covenant of the LORD and has done a shameful thing in Israel.’”

  56. Yoshua 7:19

Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory now to the LORD, the God of Israel. Make your confession to him. Tell me what you have done. Do not hide anything from me.”

  57. Yoshua 7:20

Achan answered Joshua, “It is true. I am the one who sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. Here is what I did:

  58. Yoshua 7:23

They took the things out of the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and laid them out before the LORD.

  59. Yoshua 7:25

Joshua said, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The LORD will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him; they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.

  60. Yoshua 7:26

They raised a large pile of stones over him, which is there to this day. Then the LORD turned from his burning anger. That is why the place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

  61. Yoshua 8:1

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or lose heart. Take the whole army with you and go up against Ai. See, I have handed the king of Ai over to you, with his people, his city and his land.

  62. Yoshua 8:7

Then you will rise from your hiding place and seize the city. The LORD your God will hand it over to you.

  63. Yoshua 8:8

As soon as you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the LORD has said. Those are my orders to you.”

  64. Yoshua 8:18

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold out the javelin in your hand toward Ai, for I will hand the city over to you.” So Joshua held out the javelin in his hand toward the city.

  65. Yoshua 8:27

Israel kept for themselves only the livestock and the spoil of that city, as the LORD had commanded Joshua.

  66. Yoshua 8:30

Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,

  67. Yoshua 8:31

following the command that Moses the servant of the LORD had given the Israelites, as the book of the law of Moses records: an altar of uncut stones that no iron tool had touched. On it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.

  68. Yoshua 8:33

All Israel, with its elders, officials and judges, stood on both sides of the ark, facing the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD. Outsiders stood there as well as native Israelites. Half of them stood facing Mount Gerizim and half facing Mount Ebal. Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded this earlier, so that the people of Israel would be blessed.

  69. Yoshua 9:9

They answered, “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. We have heard the reports about him and all that he did in Egypt,

  70. Yoshua 9:14

The men of Israel took some of their provisions, but they did not seek the word of the LORD.

  71. Yoshua 9:18

But the Israelites did not strike them down, since the congregation’s leaders had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the entire congregation grumbled against them.

  72. Yoshua 9:19

But all the leaders said to the whole congregation, “We swore an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, so now we may not touch them.

  73. Yoshua 9:24

They answered Joshua, “Your servants were told for certain that the LORD your God had ordered Moses, his servant, to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its people before you. So we were terrified for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.

  74. Yoshua 9:27

That day Joshua made them woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD at the place he would choose, and so they are to this day.

  75. Yoshua 10:8

The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to stand against you.”

  76. Yoshua 10:10

The LORD threw them into panic before Israel and struck them with a great defeat at Gibeon. He chased them along the road that climbs to Beth-horon and struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.

  77. Yoshua 10:11

As they fled before Israel down the slope from Beth-horon, the LORD hurled huge stones on them from the sky all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.

  78. Yoshua 10:12

On the day the LORD gave the Amorites up to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD. In full view of Israel he said, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the valley of Aijalon!”

  79. Yoshua 10:14

No day before it or after it has been like it, a day when the LORD listened to a man’s voice in this way. Truly the LORD fought for Israel.

  80. Yoshua 10:19

But the rest of you, do not stop. Chase your enemies and cut down those at the rear. Do not let them reach their cities, because the LORD your God has handed them over to you.”

  81. Yoshua 10:25

Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous, because this is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you fight.”

  82. Yoshua 10:30

The LORD handed it and its king over to Israel as well. He struck it down with the sword, with everyone in it. He left no survivors. He did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho.

  83. Yoshua 10:32

The LORD handed Lachish over to Israel, and he captured it on the second day. He struck it down with the sword, with everyone in it, just as he had done to Libnah.

  84. Yoshua 10:40

So Joshua struck the whole land: the hill country, the Negev, the foothills and the slopes, with all their kings. He left no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, as the LORD the God of Israel had commanded.

  85. Yoshua 10:42

Joshua captured all these kings and their land in a single campaign, because the LORD the God of Israel fought for Israel.

  86. Yoshua 11:6

The LORD said to Joshua, “Have no fear of them. At this hour tomorrow I will lay every one of them dead before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and set fire to their chariots.”

  87. Yoshua 11:8

The LORD handed them over to Israel, who defeated them and chased them to Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and toward the east to the valley of Mizpeh. They kept striking them down until not one was left.

  88. Yoshua 11:9

Joshua did to them just as the LORD had told him: he hamstrung their horses and set fire to their chariots.

  89. Yoshua 11:12

Joshua captured all the towns of these kings, and their kings as well, and put them to the sword. He devoted them to destruction, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.

  90. Yoshua 11:15

Just as the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses had commanded Joshua, and that is what Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.

  91. Yoshua 11:20

For it was the LORD who made their hearts stubborn, so that they came out to meet Israel in battle, in order that they would be devoted to destruction and receive no mercy, but be wiped out, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

  92. Yoshua 11:23

So Joshua took the entire land, just as the LORD had told Moses, and he gave it to Israel as an inheritance, divided among their tribes. And the land had peace from war.

  93. Yoshua 12:6

Moses the servant of the LORD and the Israelites defeated them, and Moses the servant of the LORD gave their land as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

  94. Yoshua 13:1

Joshua had now grown old, far along in years. The LORD said to him, “You have grown old and are far along in years, and very much of the land still remains to be taken.

  95. Yoshua 13:8

With the other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites had received their inheritance, which Moses gave them east of the Jordan, as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned it to them,

  96. Yoshua 13:14

Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance. The food offerings of the LORD, the God of Israel, are its inheritance, as he promised it.

  97. Yoshua 13:33

But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he promised them.

  98. Yoshua 14:2

Their inheritance was assigned by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses, for the nine and a half tribes.

  99. Yoshua 14:5

The Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they divided up the land.

  100. Yoshua 14:6

The men of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite spoke to him: “You know what the LORD told Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me.

  101. Yoshua 14:7

When Moses the servant of the LORD sent me out from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land, I was forty years old. I brought him back a report that was true to what was in my heart.

  102. Yoshua 14:8

My companions who went up with me made the people lose heart, but I followed the LORD my God with all my heart.

  103. Yoshua 14:9

On that day Moses swore an oath: ‘The land where you have set foot will surely be an inheritance for you and your descendants for all time, because you have followed the LORD my God with all your heart.’

  104. Yoshua 14:10

Now the LORD has kept me alive, just as he promised, for these forty-five years since he said this to Moses, while Israel journeyed in the wilderness. And here I am today, eighty-five years old.

  105. Yoshua 14:12

So now give me this hill country, the one the LORD promised me on that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakim were there, with large fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as the LORD said.”

  106. Yoshua 14:14

So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as his inheritance to this day, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart.

  107. Yoshua 15:13

Caleb son of Jephunneh was given a share among the people of Judah, as the LORD had commanded Joshua. It was Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron. Arba was the father of Anak.

  108. Yoshua 17:4

They came forward before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the leaders. “The LORD commanded Moses,” they said, “to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, as the LORD had commanded.

  109. Yoshua 17:14

Joseph’s descendants asked Joshua, “Why have you given us just one allotment, a single share, as our inheritance? We are a large people, because the LORD has blessed us until now.”

  110. Yoshua 18:3

So Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you hold back from going in to take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has given you?

  111. Yoshua 18:6

You are to describe the land in seven portions and bring the description here to me. Then here, before the LORD our God, I will cast lots for you.

  112. Yoshua 18:7

The Levites have no portion among you, because the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance. And Gad, Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh already have their inheritance east of the Jordan, the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.”

  113. Yoshua 18:8

So the men set out. As they were going to describe the land, Joshua gave them this command: “Go through the land, write a description of it, and come back to me. Then here in Shiloh, before the LORD, I will cast lots for you.”

  114. Yoshua 18:10

Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD, and there he divided the land among the Israelites, giving each tribe its portion.

  115. Yoshua 19:50

At the command of the LORD they gave him the town he asked for, Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. He built up the town and settled there.

  116. Yoshua 19:51

Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the tribes of the Israelites handed out these inheritances by lot at Shiloh, before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting. So they finished dividing the land.

  117. Yoshua 20:1

Then the LORD said to Joshua,

  118. Yoshua 21:2

They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given towns to live in, and their pasturelands for our livestock.”

  119. Yoshua 21:3

So at the command of the LORD, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance.

  120. Yoshua 21:8

So the Israelites gave these towns and their pasturelands to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

  121. Yoshua 21:43

In this way the LORD gave Israel the whole land that he had sworn to give to their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there.

  122. Yoshua 21:44

The LORD gave them rest all around them, in keeping with everything he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of all their enemies could stand against them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them.

  123. Yoshua 21:45

Of all the good promises the LORD had made to the house of Israel, not one failed; every one of them was fulfilled.

  124. Yoshua 22:2

He said to them, “You have carried out all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and in everything I have commanded you, you have obeyed me.

  125. Yoshua 22:3

All this long time, up to this very day, you have not abandoned your fellow Israelites. You have faithfully carried out the duty that the LORD your God commanded.

  126. Yoshua 22:4

Now the LORD your God has given your fellow Israelites rest, as he promised them. So turn now and go home to your tents, to the land that is your own, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

  127. Yoshua 22:5

But take great care to carry out the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD laid on you: love the LORD your God, walk in all his ways, keep his commandments, hold fast to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.”

  128. Yoshua 22:9

So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh turned back and parted from the Israelites at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead. That was their own land, which had become theirs at the command of the LORD given through Moses.

  129. Yoshua 22:16

“The whole congregation of the LORD says this: ‘How could you commit such a breach of faith against the God of Israel? Today you have turned away from following the LORD by building yourselves an altar, rebelling against the LORD this very day.

  130. Yoshua 22:17

Was the sin at Peor not enough for us? To this day we have not cleansed ourselves from it, even though a plague struck the congregation of the LORD.

  131. Yoshua 22:18

And now you are turning away from following the LORD today! If you rebel against the LORD today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

  132. Yoshua 22:19

But if the land you possess is unclean, come over to the LORD’s own land, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take a share of land among us. Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not rebel against us, by building an altar for yourselves other than the altar of the LORD our God.

  133. Yoshua 22:22

“The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows, and let Israel know too! If this was rebellion or a breach of faith against the LORD, do not spare us today,

  134. Yoshua 22:23

if we built ourselves an altar to turn away from following the LORD, or to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to present peace offerings on it, may the LORD himself call us to account.

  135. Yoshua 22:24

No, we did it because we were worried about what might happen. We thought that someday your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?

  136. Yoshua 22:25

The LORD has set the Jordan as a border between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD.’ In that way your descendants could make ours stop fearing the LORD.

  137. Yoshua 22:27

but to be a witness between us and you, and between the generations after us, that we are to worship the LORD in his presence by bringing our burnt offerings, sacrifices and peace offerings. So your descendants will never be able to say to ours in days to come, “You have no share in the LORD.”’

  138. Yoshua 22:28

We said, ‘If that is ever said to us or to our descendants, our answer will be, “Look at this copy of the altar of the LORD, which our ancestors made. It is not for burnt offerings or sacrifices. It is a witness between us and you.”’

  139. Yoshua 22:29

Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and to stop following the LORD today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings or sacrifices apart from the altar of the LORD our God that stands in front of his tabernacle.”

  140. Yoshua 22:31

Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is in our midst, since you have not broken faith with the LORD in this way. By this you have rescued the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”

  141. Yoshua 22:34

The Reubenites and the Gadites named the altar Witness, “because,” they said, “it stands as a witness between us that the LORD is God.”

  142. Yoshua 23:1

A long time afterward, when the LORD had given Israel rest from every enemy on all sides, and Joshua was old and well along in years,

  143. Yoshua 23:3

You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations on your account. It is the LORD your God himself who has been fighting for you.

  144. Yoshua 23:5

The LORD your God himself will push them back ahead of you and drive them out of your way, and you will take possession of their land, just as the LORD your God has promised you.

  145. Yoshua 23:8

Instead, hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done up to now.

  146. Yoshua 23:9

The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations ahead of you, and to this day no one has been able to stand against you.

  147. Yoshua 23:10

One of your men can put a thousand to flight, because the LORD your God himself fights for you, as he promised you.

  148. Yoshua 23:11

So be very careful, for your own sake, to love the LORD your God.

  149. Yoshua 23:13

you can be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive these nations out ahead of you. They will become a trap and a snare for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you are wiped out from this good land the LORD your God has given you.

  150. Yoshua 23:14

Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with your whole heart and your whole being that not a single word has fallen short of all the good words the LORD your God spoke about you. Every one has come to pass for you; not one word of it has fallen short.

  151. Yoshua 23:15

But just as every good thing that the LORD your God promised you has come to you, so the LORD will bring on you every evil thing he has threatened, until he has destroyed you and you are gone from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.

  152. Yoshua 23:16

If you break the covenant of the LORD your God, which he laid on you, and go off to serve other gods and bow down to them, the anger of the LORD will blaze against you, and you will quickly be wiped out from the good land he has given you.”

  153. Yoshua 24:2

Then Joshua told all the people, “The LORD, the God of Israel, says this: ‘In ancient times your ancestors lived on the far side of the River, Terah, father of Abraham and of Nahor, and they served other gods.

  154. Yoshua 24:7

Then they cried out to the LORD, and he set darkness between you and the Egyptians. He brought the sea over them, and it covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did in Egypt. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

  155. Yoshua 24:14

So now, fear the LORD and serve him with a whole heart and with faithfulness. Remove from among you the gods your ancestors served across the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

  156. Yoshua 24:15

If serving the LORD seems wrong to you, then make your choice today. Whom will you serve? The gods your ancestors served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, whose land you now live in? My household and I will serve the LORD.”

  157. Yoshua 24:16

The people answered, “We would never abandon the LORD to serve other gods!

  158. Yoshua 24:17

It is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. He did these great signs before our eyes, and he kept us safe all along the road we traveled and among all the peoples we passed through.

  159. Yoshua 24:18

The LORD drove out all the peoples ahead of us, including the Amorites who lived in the land. So we too will serve the LORD, because he is our God.”

  160. Yoshua 24:19

Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve the LORD, because he is a holy God, a jealous God; he will not pardon your rebellion and your sins.

  161. Yoshua 24:20

If you leave the LORD and serve the gods of foreigners, he will turn against you. He will bring harm on you and put an end to you, after all the good he has done you.”

  162. Yoshua 24:21

But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the LORD.”

  163. Yoshua 24:22

Then Joshua said to the people, “You are your own witnesses that you have chosen the LORD for yourselves and will serve him.” They answered, “We are witnesses.”

  164. Yoshua 24:23

“Then remove the foreign gods that are among you,” he said, “and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

  165. Yoshua 24:24

And the people told Joshua, “It is the LORD our God we will serve, and it is his voice we will obey.”

  166. Yoshua 24:26

Joshua wrote these words in the book of God’s law. He also took a great stone and raised it there under the oak that stood near the sanctuary of the LORD.

  167. Yoshua 24:27

Joshua said to all the people, “See this stone? It will stand as a witness against us, for it has heard every word the LORD said to us. It will be a witness against you, so that you do not deny your God.”

  168. Yoshua 24:29

After these events, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, at 110 years of age.

  169. Yoshua 24:31

Israel served the LORD all through Joshua’s lifetime, and through the lifetime of the elders who lived on after him and had known for themselves every work that the LORD had done for Israel.
