The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month in the second year after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt. He said,
just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses enrolled them in the wilderness of Sinai.
For the LORD had told Moses,
The Israelites did everything the LORD had commanded Moses. That is exactly what they did.
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
The Levites, however, were not counted among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
So the Israelites did everything the LORD had commanded Moses. That is how they camped under their standards, and that is how they set out, each by clan and by ancestral family.
This is the family line of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
But Nadab and Abihu died in the presence of the LORD when they offered an improper fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
For every firstborn is mine. When I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I made holy to myself every firstborn in Israel, both human and animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD.”
The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai. He said,
So Moses enrolled them at the command of the LORD, as he had been commanded.
All the Levites enrolled by Moses and Aaron at the command of the LORD, by their clans, every male one month old and up, numbered 22,000.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Enroll every firstborn male among the Israelites who is one month old and up, and make a list of their names.
Take the Levites for me — I am the LORD — in place of every firstborn among the Israelites, and take the livestock of the Levites in place of every firstborn among the livestock of the Israelites.”
So Moses enrolled every firstborn among the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“Take the Levites in place of every firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the LORD.
Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons at the command of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
These were the men enrolled from the Kohathite clans, all who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron enrolled them at the command of the LORD given through Moses.
These were the men enrolled from the Gershonite clans, all who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron enrolled them at the command of the LORD.
These were the men enrolled from the Merarite clans. Moses and Aaron enrolled them at the command of the LORD given through Moses.
At the command of the LORD through Moses they were enrolled and each man was assigned his work and what he was to carry. So they were enrolled, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. As the LORD had told Moses, so the Israelites did.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“Tell the Israelites: ‘When a man or a woman does any wrong to another person, thereby breaking faith with the LORD, and that person is guilty,
If the injured person has died and left no close relative to receive repayment, then what is repaid for the wrong goes to the LORD, which means to the priest. This is besides the ram of atonement, with which the priest makes atonement for the guilty one.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
The priest is to bring her near and set her in front of the LORD.
The priest is to set the woman before the LORD, let down her hair, and put the grain offering of remembrance, the grain offering for jealousy, into her hands. In his own hand the priest is to hold the bitter water that carries the curse.
then the priest is to make the woman swear the oath of the curse, and he is to say to her, “May the LORD make you a byword in curses and oaths among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh waste away and your belly swell.
From the woman’s hand the priest is to take the grain offering for jealousy. He is to wave the offering before the LORD and present it at the altar.
or when a fit of jealousy comes over a man and he becomes jealous of his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to do for her everything this law requires.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: ‘When a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to be set apart for the LORD,
For the whole time of their vow of separation, no razor may touch their head. Until the time they have set apart for the LORD is complete, they are holy, and they must let the hair of their head grow long.
Throughout the time they are set apart for the LORD, they must not go near a dead body.
For the whole time of their separation they are holy to the LORD.
They must dedicate to the LORD the days of their separation once more and bring a year-old male lamb as a guilt offering. The earlier days do not count, because their separation was made unclean.
There they are to present their offering to the LORD: a year-old male lamb without defect for a burnt offering, a year-old ewe lamb without defect for a sin offering, a ram without defect for a peace offering,
The priest is to present them before the LORD and offer the Nazirite’s sin offering and burnt offering.
The ram is to be offered to the LORD as a peace offering, together with the basket of bread made without yeast, and the priest is also to present its grain offering and drink offering.
The priest is to wave them before the LORD as a wave offering. They are holy and belong to the priest, together with the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution. After that, the Nazirite may drink wine.
This is the instruction for the Nazirite who makes a vow, for the offering they owe the LORD for their separation, besides anything more they can afford. They must do just what they promised in their vow, following the instruction for their separation.’”
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“May the LORD bless you and watch over you.
May the LORD make his face shine toward you and show you favor.
May the LORD lift up his face to look on you and grant you peace.”’
They brought their offering before the LORD: six covered carts and twelve oxen, one cart for every two leaders and an ox from each one. They presented them in front of the tabernacle.
The LORD said to Moses,
And the LORD said to Moses, “They are to present their offerings for the dedication of the altar one leader each day.”
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Aaron carried this out, setting up its lamps toward the front of the lampstand, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
The lampstand was crafted like this: it was hammered work in gold, beaten out from its base to its blossoms. It was made in keeping with the pattern that the LORD had shown Moses.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
When you have brought the Levites before the LORD, the Israelites are to place their hands on them.
Aaron is to present the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may do the work of serving the LORD.
The Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls. Then offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites.
Set the Levites before Aaron and his sons, and present them to the LORD as a wave offering.
Moses, Aaron and the whole congregation of the Israelites carried out for the Levites all that the LORD had commanded Moses about them; the Israelites did exactly that with them.
The Levites cleansed themselves of sin and washed their clothes, and Aaron presented them before the LORD as a wave offering. Aaron made atonement for them so that they would be clean.
After that the Levites went in to do their work at the tent of meeting, serving under Aaron and his sons. What the LORD had commanded Moses about the Levites was done with them.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
In the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt, in its first month, the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai and said,
They kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at dusk, in the wilderness of Sinai. Everything the LORD had commanded Moses, the Israelites did.
Those men said to him, “We are unclean because of a dead body. Must we be shut out, then, and not bring the offering of the LORD at its appointed time with the rest of the Israelites?”
Moses said to them, “Stay here, and let me hear what the LORD will command for you.”
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“Tell the Israelites: ‘Any of you, now or in generations to come, who is unclean because of a dead body or is away on a distant journey may still keep a Passover for the LORD.
But anyone who is clean and is not on a journey, and yet holds back from keeping the Passover, is to be cut off from their people. They did not present the offering of the LORD at its appointed time, and they will bear the guilt of their sin.
If a foreigner living among you wants to keep a Passover for the LORD, it must be kept by the statute and the ruling for the Passover. There is to be one statute for you all, for the foreigner and for the one born in the land.’”
The Israelites set out when the LORD commanded and camped when the LORD commanded. They stayed in camp for as long as the cloud remained over the tabernacle.
If the cloud stayed on over the tabernacle for many days, the Israelites kept the charge of the LORD and did not move on.
At times the cloud remained over the tabernacle for just a few days. They camped when the LORD commanded and set out when the LORD commanded.
They camped when the LORD commanded and set out when the LORD commanded. They kept the charge of the LORD, as the LORD commanded through Moses.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
In your own land, when you go out to war against an enemy who attacks you, sound the alarm on the trumpets, and the LORD your God will remember you, and you will be saved from your enemies.
Also on your days of rejoicing, at your appointed feasts, and on the first day of each month, blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over your peace offering sacrifices. They will be a reminder of you before your God. I am the LORD your God.”
This was the first time they set out at the LORD’s command, given through Moses.
Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place the LORD said he would give us. Come with us and we will be good to you, because the LORD has promised Israel good things.”
If you go with us, then whatever good the LORD does for us, we will do the same for you.”
They left the mountain of the LORD and marched three days, and all three days the ark of the covenant of the LORD went ahead of them, searching out a resting place for them.
By day the cloud of the LORD was above them whenever they moved out from the camp.
Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, “Rise up, LORD! Let your enemies scatter, and let those who hate you run from you.”
And whenever it came to rest, he would say, “Return, LORD, to Israel’s thousands upon thousands.”
Now the people began complaining about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD. When the LORD heard it, his anger flared up, and fire from the LORD broke out among them and burned up part of the outer edge of the camp.
The people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down.
So that place was named Taberah, because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.
Moses heard the people weeping, family by family, everyone at the entrance of their tent. The LORD became very angry, and Moses was deeply troubled.
Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? Why do I find no favor with you, that you load me with the burden of this whole people?
The LORD said to Moses, “Bring together for me seventy of Israel’s elders, men you know to be elders and officers among the people. Bring them to the tent of meeting and have them take their stand there with you.
And tell the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat. You have wailed in the hearing of the LORD, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” So the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat it.
but for a full month, until it pours out of your noses and turns your stomachs. For you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and you have wailed before him, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”
The LORD said to Moses, “Is the reach of the LORD too short? Now you will see whether my word comes about for you or not.”
So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He gathered seventy men from the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent.
Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. As soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did not do so again.
But Moses said to him, “Are you being jealous on my behalf? If only the LORD would put his Spirit on all his people and make every one of them a prophet!”
Then a wind went out from the LORD. It swept quail in from the sea and brought them down beside the camp, for about a day’s walk in one direction and a day’s walk in the other, all around the camp, about 3 feet above the ground.
While the meat was still between their teeth, before it had been chewed, the anger of the LORD flared up against the people, and the LORD struck them with a terrible plague.
“Is it only through Moses that the LORD has spoken?” they said. “Has he not spoken through us too?” And the LORD heard it.
Without warning the LORD spoke to Moses, Aaron and Miriam: “You three, come out to the tent of meeting.” And the three went out.
The LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and took his stand at the entrance of the tent. He called Aaron and Miriam, and the two of them came forward.
Then he said, “Hear what I say: whenever you have a prophet, I, the LORD, make myself known to him in a vision; in a dream I speak with him.
I speak with him mouth to mouth, openly and not in riddles, and he looks on the form of the LORD. How is it, then, that you were not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
The anger of the LORD blazed against them, and he departed.
So Moses cried out to the LORD, “O God, please heal her!”
The LORD answered Moses, “If her father had merely spit in her face, would she not carry her shame for seven days? She must be shut outside the camp seven days; then she may be taken back in.”
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
So Moses sent them out from the wilderness of Paran, as the LORD had commanded. All of them were men who were heads among the Israelites.
What is the LORD doing, bringing us into this land just so we can be killed in battle? Our wives and little ones will be carried off as spoil. Would going back to Egypt not be better for us?”
If the LORD takes delight in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land where milk and honey flow.
Just do not rebel against the LORD. And as for you, have no fear of the people who live in the land; we will eat them up like bread. The shelter over them has been taken away, while the LORD is with us. So do not fear them!”
But the whole congregation talked of stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.
The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people scorn me? How long will they go on not believing in me, when I have done so many signs among them?
But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it! It was by your power that you brought this people up out from among them,
and they will tell it to those who live in this land. These have heard that you, the LORD, are present among this people; that you, the LORD, show yourself to them openly, eye to eye; that your cloud rests above them; and that you lead the way before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
‘It was because the LORD was unable to bring this people into the land he had sworn to give them that he butchered them in the wilderness.’
‘The LORD is slow to grow angry and rich in faithful love, forgiving wrongdoing and rebellion. Yet he will never acquit the guilty; he brings the wrongdoing of parents upon their children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
The LORD answered, “I have pardoned them, as you asked.
Nevertheless, as surely as I live, and as surely as the glory of the LORD will fill the whole earth,
Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
Tell them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, I will treat you just as you have spoken in my hearing:
I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to this whole evil congregation that has banded together against me: in this wilderness they will come to their end, and here they will die.’”
those men who spread the evil report about the land died by a plague in the presence of the LORD.
They got up early in the morning and went up toward the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are! We will go up to the place the LORD spoke of, for we have sinned.”
But Moses said, “Why are you doing this, going against what the LORD has commanded? It will not work.
Do not go up, for the LORD is not in your midst; do not let your enemies strike you down.
The Amalekites and the Canaanites are there ahead of you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.”
But they recklessly went on up toward the heights of the hill country, though neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
and you present a food offering to the LORD from the herd or from the flock, a burnt offering or a sacrifice, whether to fulfill a vow, or as a freewill offering, or at your appointed festivals, to make a soothing aroma for the LORD,
the one who brings the offering is to present to the LORD a grain offering of about 2 quarts of fine flour mixed with about a quart of oil.
Also present about 1 1/4 quarts of wine for the drink offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
When you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering, or as a sacrifice to fulfill a vow, or as a peace offering to the LORD,
And present about 2 quarts of wine for the drink offering. It is a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
Everyone who is native-born is to do these things in this way when presenting a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
If an outsider is living with you, or anyone else who is among you in generations to come, and presents a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD, they are to do it just as you do.
For the assembly there is to be one statute for you and for the outsider who lives with you. It is a lasting statute through all your generations: before the LORD the outsider is to be just as you are.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
then, when you eat the food that the land produces, you are to set aside a contribution for the LORD.
Throughout your generations you are to give the LORD a contribution from the first of your dough.
Now suppose you go astray without meaning to and fail to keep all these commandments that the LORD spoke to Moses,
everything that the LORD has commanded you through Moses, from the day the LORD first gave commands and on through your generations,
if it was done unintentionally, without the congregation being aware of it, the whole congregation is to prepare one young bull as a burnt offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD, together with its grain offering and its drink offering as prescribed, and one male goat as a sin offering.
The priest is to make atonement for the whole congregation of the Israelites, and they will be forgiven, because it was a mistake and they have brought their offering, a food offering to the LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD for their mistake.
The priest is to make atonement before the LORD for the one who went astray and sinned unintentionally. Once atonement is made, that person will be forgiven.
But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or outsider, insults the LORD, and that person must be cut off from among the people.
That person has scorned what the LORD said and broken his commandment, and so must be cut off completely. The guilt rests on them.’”
Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must be put to death. The whole congregation is to stone him outside the camp.”
So the whole congregation took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
The LORD said to Moses,
‘Whenever you see this tassel, it will remind you of all the commandments of the LORD, so that you do them and do not wander after your own heart and your own eyes, following them in unfaithfulness,
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.’”
They came together against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You claim too much! Every member of the congregation is holy, all of them, and the LORD is among them. What right have you to raise yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”
Then he said to Korah and all his company, “In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will let that man come near to him. The one he chooses, he will bring near to himself.
and tomorrow put fire in them and lay incense on them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. It is you Levites who claim too much!”
Does it mean so little to you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the congregation of Israel, bringing you near to himself to do the work of the LORD’s tabernacle and to stand before the congregation and serve them?
So it is against the LORD that you and all your company have banded together. Who is Aaron, that you grumble against him?”
Moses was furious, and he said to the LORD, “Pay no regard to their offering. I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, and I have done none of them any wrong.”
Moses said to Korah, “Tomorrow you and all your company must appear before the LORD: you, they, and Aaron.
Each man is to take his censer and put incense on it, and each is to bring his censer before the LORD, 250 censers. You and Aaron are also to bring your censers.”
Korah gathered the whole congregation against Moses and Aaron at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole congregation.
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD sent me to do all these things, and that they were not my own idea.
If these men die the way all people die, and only what comes to everyone comes to them, then the LORD has not sent me.
But if the LORD does something entirely new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them along with everything they have, so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
Then fire came out from the LORD and devoured the 250 men who were offering incense.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
These men sinned at the cost of their own lives. Have their censers hammered into thin sheets to cover the altar. They were presented before the LORD, and so they became holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites.”
as a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider, no one who is not a descendant of Aaron, should come near to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his company. This was done as the LORD had told Eleazar through Moses.
The very next day the whole congregation of the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the people of the LORD!” they said.
But when the congregation gathered against Moses and Aaron and they turned toward the tent of meeting, they saw that the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
and the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, put fire in it from the altar, and lay incense on it. Then take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, because wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun!”
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the testimony.
Then Moses brought all the staffs out from before the LORD to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each leader took back his own staff.
The LORD said to Moses, “Return Aaron’s staff to its place before the testimony. It is to be kept there as a sign for the rebels, so that you can stop their complaints against me and they do not die.”
Moses did this. He did just as the LORD had commanded him.
Whoever comes near, anyone who comes near the tabernacle of the LORD, dies. Will we all perish to the last one?”
The LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s family with you will bear the guilt for any offense against the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you will bear the guilt for any offense in your priesthood.
I myself have taken your relatives the Levites from among the Israelites. They are a gift to you, given to the LORD, to do the work of the tent of meeting.
The LORD spoke to Aaron: “I myself have put you in charge of the contributions made to me, all the holy gifts of the Israelites. I have given them to you and your sons as your portion, a permanent share.
I have given you all the best of the olive oil and all the best of the new wine and the grain, the first part of the harvest that they give to the LORD.
The first ripe fruits of everything in their land that they bring to the LORD will be yours. Everyone in your household who is clean may eat them.
Every firstborn of every living thing that they bring to the LORD, whether human or animal, will be yours. But you must redeem every firstborn human, and you are to redeem the firstborn of unclean animals.
But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy. Splash their blood against the altar and turn their fat into smoke as a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
All the holy contributions that the Israelites set aside for the LORD I have given to you and to your sons and daughters with you as a permanent share. It is a covenant of salt forever before the LORD, for you and your descendants with you.”
The LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, and you will have no portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
For I have given the Levites as their inheritance the tithe that the Israelites set aside as a contribution to the LORD. That is why I have said of them, ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
“Speak to the Levites and tell them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you from them as your inheritance, you are to present a contribution from it to the LORD, a tenth of the tithe.
In this way you also are to present a contribution to the LORD from all the tithes you receive from the Israelites. From them you are to give the contribution for the LORD to Aaron the priest.
From all the gifts you receive you are to present every contribution due to the LORD, taking the best of it as the part to be made holy.’
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
“This is the statute of the law that the LORD has commanded: Tell the Israelites to bring you a red heifer that is perfect, with no defect, and that has never been under a yoke.
Anyone who touches a dead body, the body of someone who has died, and does not purify themselves makes the tabernacle of the LORD unclean, and that person must be cut off from Israel. The water to remove impurity was not sprinkled on them, so they remain unclean; their uncleanness is still on them.
But anyone who is unclean and does not purify themselves must be cut off from among the assembly, because they have made the sanctuary of the LORD unclean. The water to remove impurity has not been sprinkled on them; they are unclean.
The people argued with Moses. “We wish we had died,” they said, “when our brothers and sisters perished before the LORD!
Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, for us and our animals to die here?
Moses and Aaron left the assembly and went to the entrance of the tent of meeting. They fell face down, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
So Moses took the staff from its place before the LORD, as he had commanded him.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “You did not trust me, and so you failed to show my holiness before the Israelites. For that reason you will not be the ones to lead this assembly into the land I have given them.”
These were the waters of Meribah, “quarreling,” where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and he showed himself holy among them.
When we cried out to the LORD, he heard our voice. He sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.
At Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
Moses did as the LORD commanded. They climbed Mount Hor in full view of the whole congregation.
Then Israel made a vow to the LORD: “If you will truly hand this people over to us, we will devote their towns to destruction.”
The LORD listened to Israel’s plea and handed the Canaanites over, and Israel devoted them and their towns to destruction. So the place was named Hormah.
Then the LORD sent fiery snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many Israelites died.
The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD to take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
The LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery snake and put it up on a pole. Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”
That is why it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD: “Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,
From there they went on to Beer. That is the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”
The LORD said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, with all his army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.”
Balaam told them, “Stay here tonight. I will bring you a reply, just as the LORD tells it to me.” So the officials of Moab stayed with Balaam.
In the morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country. The LORD will not allow me to go with you.”
Balaam replied to Balak’s officials, “Balak could give me his house filled with silver and gold, and still I could not do anything, small or great, that goes past what the LORD my God has said.
Now you too, please, stay here tonight, so that I may learn what more the LORD has to say to me.”
God’s anger blazed up because Balaam was going, and the angel of the LORD placed himself in the road to stand against him. Balaam was riding his donkey, with two of his servants beside him.
The donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road, his sword drawn and in his hand, and she left the road and went out into the field. Balaam struck her to bring her back to the road.
Next the angel of the LORD took his place where the path ran narrow among the vineyards, walled in on this side and on that.
The donkey saw the angel of the LORD and pushed herself up against the wall, squeezing Balaam’s foot against it, and he struck her once more.
Once more the angel of the LORD went on ahead. This time he stood in a tight spot with no way around him, right or left.
The donkey saw the angel of the LORD and sank down under Balaam. Then Balaam’s anger flared, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What wrong have I done you, that you have struck me these three times?”
Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes. Now he could see the angel of the LORD standing in the road, his sword drawn and in his hand, and Balaam bowed his head and threw himself down, face to the ground.
The angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? It was I who came out to stand against you, because the way you are going is reckless in my sight.
Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned. I did not know you were there in the road, standing to face me. Now, if this displeases you, I will turn back.”
The angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go on with the men. But the word I give you, that and only that, you are to speak.” So Balaam went on with Balak’s officials.
Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offering while I go. Perhaps the LORD will come to meet me. Whatever he shows me, I will tell you.” And he went off to a bare hill.
The LORD put a message in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Go back to Balak and say this.”
How can I curse a people God has not cursed? How can I condemn a people the LORD has not condemned?
Balaam answered, “Do I not have to be careful to say what the LORD puts in my mouth?”
The LORD met Balaam, put a message in his mouth, and said, “Go back to Balak and say this.”
So he came to Balak and found him standing beside his burnt offering with the officials of Moab. Balak asked him, “What did the LORD say?”
He sees no disaster for Jacob and no trouble for Israel. The LORD their God is with them, and the shout for a king rings out among them.
Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you that I must do whatever the LORD says?”
When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go off to look for omens as he had done the other times. Instead he turned his face toward the wilderness.
They are like stream valleys reaching far, like gardens by a river, like aloes that the LORD has planted, like cedars beside the water.
Now get out of here and go home! I said I would reward you with great honor, but the LORD has kept you from any honor.”
‘Even if Balak gave me his house filled with silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD to do anything good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that is what I will say’?
So Israel bound itself to the Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against Israel.
The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and impale them before the LORD in the light of day, so that the burning anger of the LORD will leave Israel.”
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
the LORD said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest,
“Count the men twenty years old and up,” as the LORD had commanded Moses. These were the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:
The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram, men chosen from the congregation, who fought against Moses and Aaron with Korah’s company when they fought against the LORD.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered an improper fire before the LORD.
For the LORD had said of them, “They will certainly die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
“Our father died in the wilderness. He was not one of the company who banded together against the LORD, the company of Korah. He died for his own sin, and he had no sons.
So Moses brought their case before the LORD.
The LORD said to Moses,
If his father has no brothers, you are to give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, and he will take possession of it. This is to be a legal statute for the Israelites,’” just as the LORD commanded Moses.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Climb this mountain in the Abarim range and look out over the land I have given to the Israelites.
Moses said to the LORD,
“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all humankind, appoint a man over the congregation,
someone who will go out ahead of them and come in ahead of them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep with no shepherd.”
So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man with the spirit in him, and lay your hand on him,
He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek decisions for him before the LORD by means of the Urim. At his word they will go out, and at his word they will come in, Joshua and all the Israelites with him, the whole congregation.”
Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,
and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD had directed through Moses.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Tell them: ‘Each day you are to present to the LORD, as a food offering, two year-old male lambs without defect. This is the regular burnt offering.
It is the regular burnt offering, as it was offered at Mount Sinai: a soothing aroma, a food offering to the LORD.
Its drink offering is to be about a quart for each lamb. In the holy place pour out the drink offering of strong drink to the LORD.
The second lamb you are to offer as evening comes on, with a grain offering and a drink offering like those of the morning: a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD.
Each month, on its first day, you are to bring the LORD a burnt offering: two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs in their first year, every one of them without defect.
and for each lamb about 2 quarts of fine flour mixed with oil. This is a burnt offering, a soothing aroma, a food offering to the LORD.
Also one male goat is to be offered to the LORD as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, the Passover is kept for the LORD.
You are to bring the LORD a food offering, a burnt offering made up of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs in their first year. See that they are without defect.
Offer this food each day for seven days as a food offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD. It is added to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
The day of firstfruits, when you bring the LORD a grain offering from the new crop at your Festival of Weeks, is to be a holy assembly for you. Do none of your ordinary work.
You are to present a burnt offering, a soothing aroma to the LORD, of two young bulls, one ram and seven year-old male lambs,
Offer a burnt offering as a soothing aroma for the LORD: one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, without defect.
in addition to the burnt offering of the new moon with its grain offering, and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings, as prescribed for them. They are a soothing aroma, a food offering to the LORD.
Present to the LORD a burnt offering as a soothing aroma: one young bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old. See that they are all without defect.
On the fifteenth day of the seventh month you are to hold a holy assembly and do none of your ordinary work. Celebrate a festival for the LORD for seven days.
Present a burnt offering, a food offering with a soothing aroma for the LORD: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old. They are to be without defect.
Present a burnt offering, a food offering with a soothing aroma for the LORD: one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs a year old, without defect,
These are the offerings you are to bring to the LORD at your appointed festivals, in addition to your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, whether burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings or peace offerings.’”
So Moses told the Israelites everything the LORD had commanded him.
Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the Israelites. He said, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
When a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath that binds him to a pledge, he must not break his word. He must do everything he has said.
When a woman makes a vow to the LORD or binds herself by a pledge while she is young and still living in her father’s house,
But if her father forbids her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or pledges by which she has bound herself will stand. The LORD will forgive her, because her father has forbidden her.
But if her husband forbids her on the day he hears of it, he cancels the vow she is under and the rash promise of her lips by which she has bound herself, and the LORD will forgive her.
But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether vows or pledges binding her, will stand. Her husband has cancelled them, and the LORD will forgive her.
These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses about a man and his wife, and about a father and his daughter while she is young and living in her father’s house.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men for war, and let them go against Midian to carry out the LORD’s vengeance on Midian.
They made war on Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every man.
These are the very women who, on Balaam’s advice, led the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the affair of Peor, so that the plague struck the congregation of the LORD.
Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is the statute of the law that the LORD commanded Moses:
The LORD said to Moses,
From the men who fought and went out to war, set apart a tribute for the LORD: one out of every 500, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep.
Take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution for the LORD.
And from the half that belongs to the Israelites take one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who carry out the duties of the LORD’s tabernacle.”
So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD had commanded Moses.
and the tribute for the LORD from the sheep was 675.
There were 36,000 cattle, and the tribute from them for the LORD was seventy-two.
There were 30,500 donkeys, and the tribute from them for the LORD was sixty-one.
There were 16,000 people, and the tribute from them for the LORD was thirty-two people.
Moses gave the tribute, the LORD’s contribution, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
From this half that belonged to the Israelites Moses took one out of every fifty, of people and of animals, and gave them to the Levites who carry out the duties of the LORD’s tabernacle, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold: armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
All the gold that the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds presented as a contribution to the LORD weighed about 420 pounds.
Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
the land that the LORD conquered for the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”
Why would you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land that the LORD has given them?
They went up as far as the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, and then they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land that the LORD had given them.
The LORD’s anger burned on that day, and he swore this oath:
except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they have followed the LORD with all their heart.’
The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD had died out.
And now you have taken your fathers’ place, a new generation of sinners, to make the anger of the LORD burn against Israel even more!
Moses answered them, “If you do this, if you arm yourselves for battle before the LORD,
and every armed man among you crosses the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven out his enemies before him,
and the land is brought under control before the LORD, then afterward you may return. You will be free of your duty to the LORD and to Israel, and this land will be your property before the LORD.
But if you do not do this, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you can be sure that your sin will catch up with you.
but your servants, every man armed for war, will cross over before the LORD to the battle, as my lord says.”
Moses said to them, “If the Gadites and the Reubenites cross the Jordan with you before the LORD, every man armed for battle, and the land is brought under control before you, then give them the land of Gilead as their property.
The Gadites and the Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the LORD has said.
We will cross over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but the property we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan.”
Moses wrote down the places they set out from, stage by stage, at the LORD’s command. These are their journeys, listed by their starting points.
while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, whom the LORD had struck down among them. The LORD had also carried out judgments on their gods.
Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor at the LORD’s command, and he died there on the first day of the fifth month, in the fortieth year after the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt.
The LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab beside the Jordan, across from Jericho. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Moses gave the Israelites this command: “This is the land you are to divide among yourselves by lot as your inheritance. The LORD has commanded that it be given to the nine tribes and the half-tribe.
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
These are the men whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance among the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
The LORD spoke to Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. He said,
The LORD spoke to Moses. He said,
Do not make unclean the land where you live, the land where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.’”
They said, “The LORD commanded you, my lord, to give the land to the Israelites as an inheritance by lot, and you, my lord, were commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
Then Moses gave the Israelites this command at the word of the LORD: “The tribe of Joseph’s descendants is right in what it says.
This is what the LORD commands for the daughters of Zelophehad: ‘They are free to marry the man they prefer, as long as he is from a clan of their father’s tribe.
The daughters of Zelophehad did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
These are the commandments and rulings that the LORD gave the Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho.
